Has anyone seen this ?
Seems a bit messy to perform. I remember ghost writing on glass and that was neat, but this effect seems to point to the method. Thoughts? |

When I saw this effect , instantly another similar (already existing) effect came to my mind;"spirits by panda magic"
I can not find any differences between these two. does anyone own them? Harrismatic |

Seriously can't see anyone being amazed by this. It's just too obvious. Guess it could be an option if you really wanted to do the ashes trick, but were somewhere you couldn't burn anything. But then you really wouldn't need to spend $32 to replicate this.
Now appearing nightly in my basement.

It has some advantages as far as I can see from the trailer.the gimmick seems to be something like a special pen due to the fact that the messages shown are quite small and more elegant than the classic ashes on the arm.

Hi everybody, this is Mister Panda, founder and president of Panda Magic.
Harrismatic pointed me to this "new" effect and I just would like to give my 2 cents. The ashes on the arm effect is one of the oldest effect in the world of magic, Jean-Baptiste Houdin was already performing it in the 19th century. The most famous user of this effect was certainly Harry Houdini who actually managed to convince Sir Arthur Conan Doyle he could communicate with the spirit world. It is after seeing Houdini's performance that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle became ever so interested in esoterism. In the modern days, this effect has been reinvented in the 90's by Roger Bitoune who partnered with Magic Dream and released it under the name "Ash Pen". David Blaine has been seen using this effect. This was the first version of this effect that could use powder (previous versions were only using ashes). After the contract between Roger Bitoune and Magic Dream was over, their was an issue on who would retain the ownership of the effect. They finally agreed Roger Bitoune could still use the product he invented but Magic Dream would retain the name "Ash Pen". Roger Bitoune then started his company and released "Idem", which was an identical product to "Ash Pen". Meanwhile Magic Dream released the most popular version of this effect to this day : "Ash Pen Pro" which was basically "Ash Pen" with a booklet including routines. In 2006 Roger sold his company but retained ownership of the effects he created, he allowed me to use some of them when I started my company. This is when I released "Spirits", which is an identical effect to "Ash Pen". Today I read Tango Magic releases "Ghost Writer" and, Harrismatic can confirm it, my first reaction was "this is a much better name than Spirits !". Then I looked at the trailer and don't see what you can do with this effect that you cannot do with "Ash Pen", "Ash Pen Pro", "Idem", or "Spirits" as all these items allow you to use powder and can be used on any surface. My problem isn't that Tango Magic and Spider released a similar effect to those mentioned earlier (even more considering it comes with a DVD presenting routines which I know are good since I've been performing them for a few years now) but I am a bit annoyed by the fact that Spider is credited with the invention of this effect since he just repackaged an existing effect. So I'd like to give back to Roger Bitoune what belongs to Roger Bitoune which is the invention of the modern version of the ashes on the arm effect. I also wish the best to Spider and Tango Magic with "Ghost Writer" and hope it will be a financial success for them ! Regards, |

Okey, let's not condemn it.
it is a very visual effect and something that if you like and get ,you will perform for sure all the time which is very important in the magic business. How many effects are bought and used very seldom or even more never? it is a matter of preferences and as latins were saying "de gustibus et de coloribus non disputandum" Harrismatic |

I had the chance to review this last night during the live Magic Marketplace product review show and here are a few thoughts from the show. If you'd like to see the full review of Ghost Writer along with two more brand new effects just click the link below. Enjoy!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42KLcbMnd2U Pros: - This is easy to 'setup' and easy to perform. All you need to know are basic things to pull this off. - Simple is good. The ashes on arm effect is tough to do now with smoking laws so what they suggest here is a nice idea. Cons: - Revelations like this have been around for a long time. Ashes on arm is a classic but seems to be a favorite with laymen. - We honestly wonder if laymen will question the method. Pretty much what you think it is turns out to be the method. They do suggest a way to do this with borrowed items but you should use your own 'setup' for the most part to do this. Overall: This isn't bad but it isn't great either. If you're looking for a 'quick fix' to throw into your act you might like this. The revelation with the smoke in the glass did actually look pretty good but overall this just doesn't have that 'wow' factor. luke |

Does anyone know if ASH PEN can be done with sugar?
Also, is it a 1 time thing or will it keep on working until you wash it off? |

My notes on this effect so far....
Not resistant to being wiped with a paper towel. I allowed over 15 min to pass after application. DVD said glass could be cleaned "by any woman" and effect would remain. Not so far. ...but I am not a woman so that could be a factor. I will continue to experiment with this (the wiping part - not becoming a woman) Not resistant to liquid. Filled glass with water after allowing 15 min to dry. effect was gone. Dvd did not claim it would. I was just curious. Effect was completely clear and was activated when powder was applied as advertised. Amount I applied needs adjusted as there was a visible run. There was not time given for drying. I figured 15 min was more than enough. It is possible I put to much and this is why the wiping thing was a bust. Application uses a Qtip and very little is needed. The $30 price tag seemed high at firsd but it should last a really long time so I don't feel it was over priced. I am not comparing this to other products but simply what I have found with this product so far. If I figure out the wiping thing I will post about it. I think this effect has potential. Anyone working with this have any tips? |
