What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

My opinion? If you already have material don't try to learn new things.

I agree with Pete but after the gig is a good time to assess.
Was the event as you expected? How did your Magic fit? If you could have done any Magic in the world what would you choose? If you did it again what would you change? That kind of debriefing will improve an act over time. Good Luck! Let us know how it goes. -Mary Mowder |

In Shreveport, there will be an obvious tie to the casinos, and I bet that most of those folks have been to one. Larry Becker's "Casino Royale" is just about as good as it gets for a killer, four- or five-minute, audience participation, mentalism effect that doesn't require months of practice to pull off. With a crowd of ladies, there should also be a lot of lighthearted byplay you can do without offending anyone.
It is available from Viking Magic (although they seem to be out of stock at the moment. Check with George, though): ( http://www.vikingmagic.com/?keywords=cas......&x=0&y=0 ) There are probably folks on the Café or on the big auction site in the sky that might have one for sale.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Clinton,
Thanks for the info that sounds like something that would work great in my area. Pete and Mary , I've got several practice gigs already set up with friends, nursing homes, and ladies clubs to work out kinks and get the flow of the new tricks right, so don't worry about it not being right. If it's not I certainly won't do it. I'm lucky to have a great support group that loves magic and don't mind telling me what they like and don't like, plus we trade off in some Fantastic homemade baked cookies, pies and cakes. LOL David

Gene Anderson's Torn and Restored Newspaper is a great closer, and has nice connotations about restoration for older folks. Just be sure to orient the gimmick correctly

I just wanted to thank every one here for all the insight you helped me with on this gig. The show went fantastic and I've already booked two shows for January from this one and have several other offers for the Mardi Gras season. I listened to every one's advice and tried a few new things with some tried and true stuff that I was familiar with. I was so excited after the show I couldn't sleep that night. It was a made to order audience and a show that renewed my passion for entertaining. But, the best thing is, I have been working on an egg bag routine, pete's benson bowl routine and I discovered his soup and walnuts trick in the process, and a torn and restored newspaper routine. None of them are in my show yet, but they're getting close. I was wondering where I can find some resources for the gypsy thread or hindu thread routine, any ideas.

Thanks for letting me know about this Heglini, I'll put the book on my wish list and see if I can find a copy of the dvd. I did come across an "easier" version by Norman Rhodes in Lewis Ganson's The Art of Close Up Magic, Vol. I.
