Well, that distinction is Bob Cassidy's, but cheers I think it's a really fundamental concept to grasp. (Welcome to mentalism!)
One of the problems with the more recent trend in "Psychological illusions" is that you're often reducing your claim. This can make your actions more believable and palatable, but it can also render your actions unimpressive if you're not careful - I know that I certainly used to have people say things like "You're just reading my facial expressions" or "Well, it's obvious I was thinking X". This doesn't mean that the angle isn't workable, but there's a fine line to tread between something "realistic" and something which is still amazing and entertaining. It's entirely possible to memorise a deck of playing cards in a couple of minutes, but to do so in 15 seconds would be insane (The world record is 21 seconds, I believe.) There is also an issue with the amount of time one spends "lecturing" your audience - if this is genuinely interesting and entertaining, there is no problem, but again it's very a fine line to tread. It may also be dependant on the environments you're working in - I can't that imagine sitting in a restaurant and having someone interrupt my evening and prattle on about NLP for ten minutes would be a pleasant experience, for instance. |

"Don't worry if I fail because I never do" was, as far as I'm aware, a Chan Canasta line.

Those old lines are only old to those who watch lots of performances. I doubt many regular spectators have heard "was that fair?" or "this is an experiment" more than once or twice in their lives. It really should be all about them, and not what keeps things fresh for performers.

I agree with Ted. How many mentalism shows has the average person ever seen? 0.
If a line is good, works, and is engaging then don't worry if it's a little "old hat" within the community. Worry more about how it comes across to those outside the community who have never seen your show (or most likely anything remotely like you) before in their lives.

The purpose of the performance is to entertain and amaze. If it works...use it. If it enhances the drama of your presentation...use it. You are performing for the public -- not magicians or mentalists. I don't agree with using another performer's material...but there are some "stock" lines that can be very effective when used intelligently.

My original point is that I don't think many stock lines are effective, but they have been stock for so long that some performer consider them effective or they just took the easy way out when "scripting" their act.

I use the phrase "This might not work" all the time. Mind you, when I say "this might not work" it's because it might, actually, not work.
As someone wiser than me once said: "Cliches are only cliches because they're cliches."
