I am just taking a poll of the members here on their favorite non-gimmicked/sleight of hand-based comedy silk effects and routines. If you have something original that you wish to share, please describe the effect. This list is just a thing of curiosity, and to see what is being done differently in this genre these days.

I have one original thing I did with silks. I named it Traveling Silks, and it got 4 stars in Genii in the 80's.
Basically it was acrobatic silks without the bar. Distributed by Tannen's and Robbins. I had two blue and one yellow tied at the ends. One of the knots was a marconic (someone said) sliding knot. You do the sucker gag moves and finally you do have the odd color in the middle. When you do this, you tug on the silk knots making them permanent or tight so the spectator cannot remove them easily or discover the gimmick. Note: The sliding knot was a twist of the silk as I tied it which someone identified as possibly a Marconick knot. --------------------------- Another new idea I did recently was a silk in balloon method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5C41ImYlUn4 This is on my coin balloon DVD Posted: Sep 22, 2011 11:08pm I feel this is not a shared subject. Any other silk magic? Doc, you started this.

Apparently there is no comedy in silk magic...Can you hear the crickets chirping here?
I like to perform the Slydini Silks in the style of Slydini, but with a Bill Malone-esque twist, turning it into a do-as-I-do challenge. It is always goes over well. I have used your (Ian) Silk in Balloon in conjunction with a Silks Over The Head routine where the last silk is one I am supposed to keep track of. At the end, after I have convinced the audience I have thrown the silk over their head, as opposed to the one on stage with me, and as they are looking behind them, the silk appears in the balloon. Mis-made flag is another favorite. Thanks for your original post Ian! |

These "make a list" posts always remind me of summer camp dance nights, where the recreation director always felt obliged to get the boys and girls out of the dark corners and onto the dance floor with goofy dance themes. "OK, kids, all the girls put an orange under their chins and the boys have to get it under their own chins without using their hands. No kissing, Tommy! I saw that, Jack, watch your hands!"
I always get the feeling that I'm being asked to contribute blood... hard earned blood, I might add... built up after years of experience. Meanwhile the camp recreation director is writing down all the ideas to go in his book, or worse, into his act so the next time I see a magician performing, he will be doing my act instead. No wonder the crickets chirp!

I’ve posted my “adult” version of the 20th Century Silks at least once here on the Café. It is a subtle take on the 20th Century Shorts and implies that the Baffling Bra gag is going to occur. It doesn’t. The routine gets several nice laughs and has a magical surprise ending.
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/searc......=3769213 Then there is the Bev Taylor comedy color changing silk routine “Is my Face Red” that is still in print and pretty easily found. And Billy McComb’s “Half Dyed Silk” is another comedy color changing silk routine with the surprising but funny ending. Many pretty standard silk tricks have been turned into comedy pieces by various performers. Jean Merlin’s performance of the Sympatric Silks was a full stage production and funny as well as magic. It was his personality and performing style that made it funny. Likewise Paul Pottasy puts gentle humor in his presentation of the Sympatric Silks. Both artists doing similar tricks but greatly different in style and presentation and both getting laughs showing that just about any trick can become a funny or comedic routine.

Many think they are funny with their comments, but I think they should read what they wrote. It looks like we have about 7 magicians that actually answer questions and make good solid suggestions and try to help. Then we have about 200, what I like to refer to as "men", those quiet, knowledgable magicians who think everyone should find out for themselves. So they are not sharing anything of any value to the masses. Lists do nothing but take up valuable server space. Thus this is one reason why no one coming into the Café respects magic secrets. If magic is only a big joke, that is why it is not held to any standard. If I was making the rules things would be very different, and this would be magicians helping magicians. Really! |

Sorry about my post. The items listed all use gimmicks. I don't perform any non-gimmick comedy silk magic.

Harry, no need to apologize! Thanks for the post - most of those can be done without gimmicks too. I remember some of the ones you mentioned and had forgotten about them. Love the 21st Century Silks presentation of yours!
I will say that I have no intention of using the routines of anyone else and am quite offended/disappointed if anyone should think so. The one thing that is most annoying to me is in fact the lack of originality in this art. I always strive to create routines and effect that work for me, my style and my personality. What works for everyone else does not work for me. To that end, often times I have seen these "Favorites List" posts bring something good out of the past - things that have long since been forgotten and deserve to be brought out from the shadows. That was more the intention here - nothing to do with 'presentation stealing.' |

Sympathetic Silks can be done with funny patter. Without gimmicks is the only way I know how to do it.
