Just got back from the local film festival where I saw the amazing Norwegian film King of Devil's Island (Kongen av Bastøy).

I looked really closely, but I didn't see Tommy anywhere. Was this a mistake.

Regardless, the film is set on an island prison for boys in 1915. With minimal dialog and lost of absolutely brilliant Scandinavian stone faces, the narrative takes shape as the boys become aware of the desperation of waiting for years to be declared rehabilitated. This is a dark and moving movie with none of the cute bad kids of Oliver and the like.

Highly recommended.

Smile Thanks. My son is going to jail in about five hours time and he should be here in bit and I can then tell him all about it.

John, the Milwaukee Film Festival is going on right now and this was one of the films that was showing last saturday night while I was working. I really wanted to see it, but we can't watch the movies while we are doing a volunteer shift. I believe it runs once more next weekend. It's good huh? Did you see any other interesting films?

It's the only one I've seen so far. My daughter is the family film fest fanatic and she wanted me to see this one with her; I very much enjoyed it. (We're only a few days into the festival right now.)

I'll ask her for recommendations tonight and post them here.

Good deal. There are a lot I want to see. We earn tickets to see movies by volunteering and there are a bunch I want to see. I may work one more shift but then I will use my vouchers to actually go see some. Our fest started last thursday and runs through this sat.

I don't know what films are showing there, but of the films I counted ballots for this festival, "Marathon Boy" (which I really wanted to see), "Here", "The Flaw", and "Kinshasa Symphony" all recieved high marks. Mostly 4's and 5's.

Great to know. I will pass that on and come back with recommendations.

Here's the Edmonton International Film Festival site.

Milwaukee, I presume is here.

After a quick scan of the websites I see only two films in both festivals.

I am a Girl
King of Devil's Island

Interesting that we hit one first try.

Yes, not too many titles showing at both. It is funny that you brought that one up. I was surprised when I saw the title of this thread. That one jumped right out at me when I was looking at the schedule. It said something in the description like "Inspired by Dead Poets Society and Lord of the Flies but based on real life events" or something like that. I hope I get a chance to see it.

Ha! I would say nothing like Dead Poets Society or Lord of the Flies.

Yeah? Well I just watched Lucio Fulci's "Zombie" where a zombie battles a shark with a naked girl looking on in horror. Top that!

Is that right! Guess you can't always believe what you read. Wonder who came up with that description.

The superficial similarity is that you have a bunch of boys in isolation. I guess that's all they looked at.
