Godzilla,
I use a lot of what is taught in "Read them and Reap", by Jay Navarro and Phil Hellmuth. Its a book written for poker players but has a lot to do about physiological tells and body language. Respect, Billy |

Most of what you'll read on body language is simplistic garbage and not worth the paper it's written upon. This is because every person is an individual. It's not a question of "If a person does X it means Y," but rather, "If a person does X when confronted with Y stimulus during Z situations, then during Z situations if Y stimulus occurs, it is likely that the person will do X." In other words, to be accurate with body language, you need to calibrate.
The first book ever published that recorded this phenomenon, the book on which all others are superficially based, is called "Kinesics in Context" by Birdwhistle. It gives you the truth that the others barely shadow. |

I am never accurate, nor do I try to be, with body language....but its the hook I give the audience to hang there speculation upon.

I was asking about the books for a woman who is waiting to get results back from her Bar exam !
Did not want to mention ,that dirty word on forum! She is always looking for ways to aid her in her journey,as of being young and female ! -G

The Ekman books are very worthwhile, I believe his FACs are/were used by the police in some ways too...

Iain is talking about Paul Ekman who the series Lie to me was roughly based on.
The F.A.C.S (Facial Action Coding System) is a series of specific codes that are used to document facial movements and there is a test one can do to become a facs coder. Another site where you can learn about expressions is called humintell which also teaches microexpression training. I have personally studied facs and it is a very deep and complicated system to learn. If someone wanted to learn how to become a facs coder there are two routes... 1, Buy a C.D. from the website of Joseph Hager and self study then do the final encoding exam or 2, Paul Ekman's collaborator Erika Rosenberg runs Live 5 day trainings in universities throughout the world where you can learn the system in small groups and then take the final exam a few weeks later when you are proficient in encoding facial movements. I hope this explains this side of body language a little. Regards Dr Rob. |

I had a fun routine based on FACs, nothing new method wise, but the presentational angle was fun...used photos and envelopes...asking people to try and resist reacting to the emotive content of the photo, but never could...

In grad school, I did a lit review based on non-verbal communication and deception. I'm not an expert by no means at reading body language, but after sifting through a lot of studies and books on the subject, I have to agree with dmkraig. The success rate of reading body language has much to do with calibrating for personality, situation, and circumstances.
