Just remembered seeing a clip of the late Doug Henning performing the needle thru balloon sideways. I am just wondering if this is possible without the aid of putting any Scotch Tape on it.

You can try inflating it, putting some rubber cement on the points you'll be using and then, after the rubber cement dries and a little talc powder put on it to keep it from sticking to anything, deflate it so you can blow it back up when you're ready to use it.
Give that a try. It should (hopefully) work for you. Mark. |

If you under inflate the balloon it should work.

I think he was trying to do it without using Scotch tape.

You could always turn the balloon sideways.

Wouldn't Doug have had the means to get special balloons manufactured that would allow for this?

I don't think there is any point to doing it sideways unless you are trying to fool magicians. It's great as it is.

In the photo, he isn't necessarily holding the nozzle in his hand. He could be holding the side of a balloon.

Back in the mid 70's I remember buying balloons for this effect that were made with an extra-thick area on the side for just the purpose mentioned here. I've not been able to find them since. I've asked several people about this, that were around at that time, and nobody seems to even remember these.

Check with Denny Haney of Denny & Lee Magic. He'd probably know about it and has helped me with things before. He's a great guy who is always willing to help others.

Is the needle actually going thru the balloon, or is Doug holding the needle behind the balloon?

Holding it behind the balloon is the first thing I thought.
