I had a tooth up front and slightly to the right that was a baby tooth that decided never to leave...until a couple of weeks ago when it got loose. During a rehearsal I took a deep breath and sucked it down my throat! Gonna get an implant, but until then they've built what they call a "flipper," which is a single tooth on a secondary hard palate piece with hooks that hold it in.
This temporary piece covers the front third of the roof of my mouth. It lowers my hard palate behind my teeth ever so slightly. I practice my vent while driving...and have discovered that this makes my B's, P's and M's absolutely perfect. It's irritating as the devil to wear...but still... hmmmmmm. Maybe those ads in the backs of comic books should have been selling flippers all these years. -Philip |

Philip, did you inhale the tooth into your lungs, or were you able to cough it up?
Is the “flipper” removable so it can be taken in and out for performances? |

I remember reading in Paul Stadelman's book, he actually had a cap made for one of his teeth that with his mouth closed and teeth together, it kept them apart just the right amount for doing his ventriloquial voice.

Part of my practice when learning was a clicking exercise with the tounge to strengthen the muscle. That allowed you to stretch it for better, stronger contact with the roof of your mouth. Now that yours has lowered, you are experiencing that stronger contact, which has made the improvement.
Sorry you have to go through all this. Worse yet, when the tooth goes through you the tooth fairy tends to leave you a smaller token... kinda stinks... Tom |

Yeah...I thought about watching for the tooth and cleaning it off for the tooth fairy, but I didn't figure she'd leave me enough to make it worth it.
Buzz...It went halfway down my throat and I made some choking noises...then swallowed it and went on with the line. When we got to a stopping place in the rehearsal, I said, "Incidentally, I swallowed that tooth." The flipper is removable...like a partial plate...but it's also temporary. Once the implant's in I won't need the flipper. -Philip |

I am glad it went down the lesser of the problematic routs.
The post has me thinking about getting a flipper to use during my performances; I am going to ask my dentist when I go for my visit next week Thanks Philip |

If the plosives and labials are still hard, just keep practicing. Besides, think of the day when you get to a gig and realize you left the flipper at home. Bob |

I figure to apply what I'm learning with the flipper to my regular vent stuff once it's gone...it's a tool, I guess...like those perforated tongue deperssors Clinton used to give out.

In getting a proffered treat from my fingers, my littlest dog bit my little finger...I wrapped it in bandaids to keep it from bleeding, but it makes me type things like "deperssors," in the above note.

But what will you blame it on once your finger is healed?
