You know that stunt where four people sit in a square, lay on each other's laps, and then the chairs are removed and the four people remain suspended? Ok, I know how to perform the stunt, but I have no idea as to how to present the trick. It is as if I have "writer's block" when it comes to this effect. Can anyone help me give me at least a starting point?

I want to be the curator when I grow up...but, of course, I can't do both.

Now, for some actual help. What about this stunt appeals to you? Why do you want to add it to your show? Why do you think people should want to watch this stunt? Answer those question and you will be off and running towards a presentation idea. Then pick up a bunch of the Orben comedy books.

Todd, if memory serves me correctly, you did this with me and three others from the PACC conference in Chicago many years ago. I thought it was cool. When you taught me how to blow fire from my mouth, at that same conference, I singed my mustache. You put on a great presentation for us and I really enjoyed spending time with you , Bruce, Bob Brown and the others.
BTW, I have not attempted the fire from mouth again and won't even consider using the mouth freshener. Glenn

Wow. Thanks, Dan.
And thanks, Todd, for sharing the notes from which I learned the mechanics of the stunt.

Never seen Stephons act ( ), but if it's based on Todd's help it MUST be good. Todd's been doing this effect for a VERY long time. Never heard of Larry, but I believe Todd has this one.

I first saw the "4 man suspension" performed by Funsters (Clowns) on the Sells and Gray Circus in the Mid 70's...Perhaps you should consult Old Circus Funsters (Clowns), and while yer at it, ask them their Variation of the "Tide Gag", "Bigger,Bigger", "Niagra Falls" and my Favorite "The Atomic-Hair Grower"...
*This is Mike Vitka, and I first saw the four man suspension performed when I was an elementary school kid. At a cub scout jamboree. It was not performed by professional magicians, or Clowns (Old Circus Funsters), but by boy scouts fooling around. {Also, working on getting a propper email so I can post on my own} ** This is Cris Siqueira, or "Monga" ("crisgal" in this board), and I've seen the act many times as a kid in the 70s, performed by clowns in Brazilian circuses. In the US I've seen a few versions, including Todd's and A.J,'s, and I'm with Danny, by the way, Swami's is my favorite. Curator back now, I guess you should seek out 40-50 year old Cub Scouts and Old Brazilian Palhacos...Uh, Racetrack thought this was a waste of his time...As you can see We are stocked w/ 4 man suspension Knowledge, Stop by as per Route and we will have a Syposium....

I love this stunt. I'd not performed it for a while but revisited it this past summer. It's perfect for those "I've lost my props but need to do a show" moments as you only need to borrow 4 chairs and you're good to go.
Anyone know how old this is? And which past genius first came up with the idea? My own presentation is as part of a psudo hypnosis routine. Presented very tounge in cheek and played for laughs and nothing else. I'm sure many of the more creative minds that pass through here have got better and brighter ways of doing this, but this does the job I need it to do.

It also works as a non-stage activity. Give a hundred kids the goal of seeing how many of them can fit into a chair circle. It's really interesting to see how they solve the logistical problems. I've seen it get to about 65 in the circle, and the others coordinating chair removal.

Everyone's friend, Aye Jaye, worked with some comics that did it back in the 1950s. There is also a litograph of Napoleon's troops (or perhaps Wellington's troops, I don't remember which) doing a circle sit back in the early part of the 19th Century.
