Iain,
I never questioned Lior or his ability to perform or be passionate (nor his beard growing potential), just his statment "magic is like acrobatics". Its funny, becuse in magic we say juggeling and XCM are liek acrobatics, its just a perception thing and often false. Respect, Billy |

Billy - I wasnt directing my comments at you...was just adding to the praise to lior (independently)...
one of my friends has an absolutely beautiful ring and rope routine, only mildly spoiled by the whole narration flaw that magicians can have...

Iain,
Sorry, got into a knee jerk mentality today! I agree with everything you are saying, narration is a huge flaw (one that I'm not immune too). However, even with all the flaws in most magicians performance..magic can and often will give something more to a participant then just "tricks". I think this post got off track, I apologize. I happen to be land locked with a sick child today so I have been interacting but not adding to the posts out of boredom, maybe I will go do something productive. Respect, Billy |

Part of the interpretation problem is this-
There was a time, not so long ago, when the great majority of mentalists and hypnotists were either full time or professional-level part time performers. Neither art form held much interest for hobbyist magicians because both mentalism and hypnosis really require an audience of strangers to be presently effectively and properly. Neither can achieve its potential before audiences of friends and family.(No man is a prophet in his own land.) Fairly recently, with the rising popularity of Derren Brown in the UK and the incorporation of "mentalism" in popular street magic specials, together with the misconception among many newcomers that mentalism is just an easier form of magic, the field has become glutted by hobbyist magicians who have decided to call themselves "mentalists" so they can be just like "the guy on TV." Slowly the art has become trivialized and, in the hands of many, indistinguishable from amateur magic. I find it all pretty lamentable. But that's just the way it is. Eventually the mentalism/hypnosis bandwagon will pass and, I guarantee, a majority of today's "mentalists" will have latched on to whatever the newest fad may be. (And, I predict, a large percentage of those posting on these forums will have moved on as well.) The rest of us will still be on-stage, performing for the paying public just as we always have done. Good thoughts, Bob |

Derren's been popular in the uk for over a decade now...and maybe 3 years ago was the absolute peek of copycat derrenites...because derren is changing and moving into slightly different worlds...i think we're now starting to see the beginnings of a shift towards the more traditional/old school psychic entertainer...
and lots of previous shouters and screamers against this type of presentation are either dissapearing (as bob says) or are now resurfacing and latching onto the next "what's old is new again" phase...so we have a percentage of people who buy neal scryer's excellent work, and paul voodini's - because they know its powerful and they want that "power", not realising the real power is focusing on the people you are sharing it with... thankfully, as its more book based, than dvd, we have less idiots broadcasting it badly on youpube... those of us who work hard and try our best are buying bob's, neal's, paul's and john riggs' work (to name but a few) - just because we know quality when we see it... well, that's how I'm seeing it at least...

MY GOD - Can we stay on topic - its about order of effects - not the boring old Magic vs. Mentalism humbug.
Heck, here is the order of most threads on the Café Scenario 1 An interesting topic is posted a) a few good comments or listed or b) forget A we get to "fake psychics" "magic vs. mentalism" "newbies vs. pros" and "whose ripping off who" .... its time to release the HOUNDS

This thread is not about magic versus mentalism - start a new thread... it becomes tiresome when it gets into every thread. Its humbug for any of us to keep taking things off track.
And yeah, how many threads are there on magic versus mentalism already? I don't go reporting posts - usually some other force erases them anyway. I was asking to get it back on track - sorry if my post made some people rattle - if so, well maybe go reflect on them. Why are people wasting your time on here? Why do any of us. Sorry to have pointed out that these threads often go off topic again and again - and if you can't get into an honest reflection and look at how it went - too bad. Respect. And it goes both ways. Go ahead and do what you want. I was just hoping we'd stick to talking about how to do order of effects, theory, theatre and so on. so SORRY.

The normal flow of this conversation caused it to evolve. That's what discussion is all about.

Yeah, but just like a class and you have objectives or whatever - a thread title post's topic is supposed to guide it - it can deviate here and there - but usually one would say "hey lets start another topic" because otherwise trying to glean any info from a thread becomes a pain... I just noticed it was now 50% non-topic original of posts on this thread... and I really was enjoying the actual meat of what this was about.
Ever have a advertised mentalism show and someone yells "shuddup I want you to do balloon animals? I don't wanna see mentalism...." or a workshop you say you might be teaching on topic A and some person says "hey I am not interested in A - lets talk about something else" Its like, why post in this forum if its becoming a new topic? Since I am going off topic here... as this almost belongs as a post in Iain's Sticky thread, I say its like scripting the order of effects - and never knowing how people are going to react... your show can deviate here and there but there is usually - in a well thought out story arc, perhaps 3 messages / goals you constantly facillitate the discussion and comments around. Well, that is my humble opinion. I think if I hadn't off typed "OH GOD" and "RELEASE THE HOUNDS" I would have been read more effectively. I do believe in my own reflection that using those capitalized terms has upped the intensity of my comments too much and for that I apologize. The humbug is not on content - it was on process - which I think still stands. IMHO I now retire so peace.

Without in any way disrespecting the secondary discussion particiapnts in this thread, I agree with you Doc. I'm sure if everyone was to think about your suggestions for when a thread is going off topic they would think "Fair enough"
.....and may I say that you bought the thread back on topic beautifully with your example of how people may want to derail your performance direction by heckling (or whatever) and how you may sometimes need to be assertive (in a casual way) to bring the show back to its intended direction. Your concentric circle DIDN'T deviate so much as to become a square Kam
If I speak forth, many a mind will shatter,
And if I write, many a pen will break. .....and when I consider my own self, lo, I find it coarser than clay! |

Humbug, I say, humbug! (I love that word - It always makes me think of Ebenezer Scrooge. And, honestly Doc, you did come across a bit like him - especially the snarky "Respect goes both ways" line. I don't recall ever disrespecting you.)
But I understand your point Doc and Kam. And I did give an extensive answer to the original question earlier in this thread. The suggestion came up that the way effects were ordered was the same in a mentalism as in a magic show. (At least that was implied) Hence the diversion - maybe slightly off-topic - but directly related to it. Anyway, back to the original topic then- I always liked the suggestion that Tarbell quoted from an old time minister who was famous for his sermons: "First you tell them what you're going to tell them. "Then you tell them." "Then you tell them what you just told them." Good thoughts, Bob |

Experts on the human brain will tell you that, for survival reasons, our brains our programmed to remember the first and last events in a sequence. We all intuitively know this, and stucture our routines with an opener and a closer. For those interested in marketing themselves, I would recommend the book "Neuromarketing" which goes into detail about how the brain operates when making decisions (such as who to hire for their next event).
