For years I've wanted to do a show based upon a haunted doll house. I recently purchased a nice antique doll house with furnature. It is about 2' x 1' It has 6 rooms, two storys. What I am looking for ideas for effects that would make for a fun but creepy show. Perhaps moving and vanishing furnature, odd noises (that crying little girl sound is always a skin crawler), appearing blood stains. Weird lights with no apparent source.
I've done some searches but have not really found anyone doing such an act. Nor have I found any effects. I am sure that flea circus gaffs might work as well as thread work, but with this group I bet there are amazing ideas I have not even thought of. You might want to check out The Great Leon's Miniature Haunted House. The booklet with description of the routine, and basic construction is available from Magic, Inc. Even if you don't go with the specific effects described, the basic method employed should spark your imagination for many others.
Here is the version I have been working on for a few years. It's basically done now, although I haven't completely worked up the routine and story to my satisfaction. It's really a back burner project, but when I decide to fully flesh it out, I'll definitely add it to my program. http://www.themagiccompany.com/haunted_house.html

Some of the effects of "Sefalaljia Revisited" from The Wizards' Journal #10 might be of use here. Check Qua-Fiki's video in the ad and you might get some ideas.

I think words appearing on the walls would be pretty creepy....

In addition to having things happen within the dollhouse.....perhaps the spirit of the house escapes and manifests itself in the room you are
performing in as well......perhaps some sort of sympathy effect between the room you're in and a room in the house?

Some ideas come to mind.
A wall that looks normal until a tiny hand presses against it from the other side. Then it looks rubbery and a face presses against it. Like something is trying to come through from another dimension. For an example look at the 58 second mark - http://youtu.be/1fldFkjlB3Y Another would be blood that runs down the wall and spells something out. At the end I think the doll house should slam shut as a scream is heard. As far as lighting is concerned dark blues, purples, and reds really set mood for horror. |

Not that I'm making any money from it but Jason Brumbalow's new Pure Smoke would be a fantastic fog machine for this type of use.

Guess I need a door for it...hmm maybe I could create a door that would bend bow and utilize that face push through, then opens (starting the "show" then it slams shut with a scream that ends it. Ideally as I think of it...if the whole show could be remote controlled or on a timer so I could stand well away from it and tell the story as stuff starts to happen. Man I wish I was electrically mechanically inclined.... "For it shows things that were, and things that are, and things that yet may be. You're welcome. There's some very interesting stuff out there regarding haunted dolls houses, including some short stories based on the idea.

Hey DrNorth,
It could be operated remotely, but it would take some circuitry knowledge and some careful soldering. However it's not designed to do that out of the box, yet it would serve the purpose of a small volume of rolling smoke if you could get it to work....

This is just my opinion on the mechanical side of this... and no offense to those who either use it or build it. Electronics are, I think best reserved for effects that are not kinetic. Movements based upon electronics have the feel of being robotic. There is often a sterile precision to the movements. This gives the viewer a sense that the same is probably done much better by the likes of Disney. However, movements caused by manual operation can be controlled with the utmost subtlety. It's the human touch. That's the one thing I really like about The Great Leon's concept. The operator has the choice of playing to the mood.
The idea is to have this look like it is actually haunted by a living(?) entity, not an automaton. Don't sacrifice the authenticity of what is being conveyed, in favor of the "coolness" of the perceived effect.
