A lot of guys seem to be using sharpened pieces of wood these days. We're considering building an actual wood box for ours and dressing it to use pool cues for it.
We currently use umbrellas. I was able to find them for 1$ each at the dollar store.

I thought there was a specific reason to use umbrellas with the cardboard box... and it's explained in the booklet.
As somebody else stated already on the Café : Not all changes in an illusion will improve the effect. Oliver. |

Yes, the umbrellas do create a larger visual impact and they're just a better idea. I'm really not sure if there is an actual "secret" to this. It's simply putting the sticks where the girl isn't. A real advantage of the cardboard box is that it doesn't turn around since it's not on a rolling base so you can't actually see the entry or exit points in the back panel. Much like with the sword basket, it is just a matter of a lot of practice with the girl and the props.

It also gives the effect more lift of course. You do have to make sure that the person in the box doesn't tip over inadvertently whilst moving about inside etc... |

As I understood it, the umbrellas give it a unique visual effect, if a somewhat ridiculous one if you plan on playing the illusion straight. I saw a performance once setting the Voodoo Box in a dramatic tribal ritual setting treated in complete seriousness, which made the brightly coloured childrens' umbrellas a little out of place and confusing. So be sure to choose something appropriate to your intended theme.
For my own swordbox (for which I've been both inside the box and outside of it with different partners and learnt more from rehearsing this particular routine than any other) I used wrought iron bars with plastic balls attached to the ends to make them more visual, though I found I needed to treat the bars regularly against rust. |

This one is so funny when my brother and I do this. I can't think of anything better than umbrellas for this one. We come out with the box flat. My brother is putting the box together as I dance to " dancing in the rain " . He doesn't know am doing any of this. Then I start to Sword fight with one of the umbrellas. Then I get the umbrella stuck in my belt. I can't get the umbrella off my belt. The by play here is so funny! Then the umbrella open up and I fall backward. There is a lot more we do but you get the idea. And yes, we do turn the box around.
