The lovely Nani Darnell was so kind to send me a copy of this nastolgic DVD. The unaired pilot to Kelloggs that became the Magic Land of Allakazam. Originally was titled "Kelloggs Magic Circus", but because Kellogs was pushing a new product "All Stars" with a cartoon Wizard of Oats, and the song he sang as he magically put the holes in the stars had Allakazam in it, the title got changed to Magic Land of Allakazam. This was done in Dallas before the move to LA. Nani is presented as "the world's most beautiful clown" and Bev Bergeron was billed as "Rebo who is ...just a clown" Beyond that you would swear you were watching an episode of Allakazam, you can see how the show shaped from this pitch. Really reminds me of transition in performing style between the original series "Time for Magic" and Allakazam. Elements of both in them. Complete with commercials to plug Kellogs cereals using Mark's magic. And, of course the magic word is "Kelloggs" Basil the Baffeling bunny's predecessor is in this one, and while a name beginning with an M to go with Magical Rabbit, not as catchy as the three B bunny to come later.
In addition there are some bonuses of promo ads for 7-11 and oak farms in the Dallas area, a pitch I'm sure looking for a sponsor for magic circus. Offered magic tricks you could get for buying half a gallon of oak farms ice cream from a Dallas area 7-11. Many of these tricks ended up in Mark's TV Magic Kit he and Nani used to sell at Tiches Dept. store in Dallas. Mark does his cups and balls routine, as well as a sponge ball routine done with marbles, there is the sub trunk (darn not the one of Mark and Nani's sitting in my living room though), a twenteth Century silk routine, linking ropes, all classic Wilson routines. Mark and Nani's son Greg found the tape in the warehouse and had it remastered to a DVD. It was premiered at the Castle on Oct 1 to celebrate 50 years of Allakazam. Offered through Hocus Pocus Magic, but I would imagine you could get a copy from Mark and Nani. A great nastalgia trip and magic history all the way.
"Now here's the man with the 25 cent hands, that two bit magician..."
