TonyB either your full of **** or an idiot. I will not risk my life or my family's well being for the sake of some cc's I can stop with a phone call and any amount of cash. Mugggers in my city do not rob people with a fist, but with a knife, a gun or anything heavy that they may have available to them. Wish you well in your next confrontation.

Just gladly hand over your phone ,providing you've download the 'Find my iPhone" app .. Which will pinpoint your phones location on a map to within 50 metres.Theres been quite a few cases in the media lately of recovered stolen goods using this technology.

I've been mugged 3 times in my life, the worst situation was about 30 years ago. I was stationed at Lowery AFB for training. A few friends and I were on Colfax, not sure if it was Denver or Aurora, we were headed to a comic book shop. A man with a gun confronted us. I recall saying, "Whatever you want", then I was on the ground unable to rise, he was gone and my friends along with people I had never seen were standing around me. I don't really remember much about it other than being on the ground and the smell. There was a smell of burnt hair, a smell that gets me sick to my stomach to this very day. I was confused and did not know what happened.  I was lucky, nothing vital was damaged, and I was exempt from formations for my remaining time there.
I don't carry anything that isn't replaceable and refuse to carry a weapon. I'm not prepared to take a life or give up my own, and if you are going to carry one, that is exactly what you have to be prepared to do. Tony |

Tboehnlein, I have been mugged a couple of times, but never successfully. Perhaps it is foolish of me, but I don't want to live in a world where the man with the knife is always right. If you draw a knife on me I will go for you. It has happened twice, and both times I ended up uninjured and on top.
A gun is a different matter. I will walk away. But anti-social behavious thrives because most of us remain too passive.

Tony, I am guessing you've never heard the old maxim "run away from a knife, run towards a gun". Sounds wrong, but a target running away is easier to shoot and unless you are going to throw that knife...
I question the psychology of not carrying a weapon. The one attempted mugging I encountered was in Nicaragua and was immediately over when I produced a knife and brandished it at my attackers, making it clear I was no soft target. If I thought that they were simply going to take my wallet, I would have handed my dummy wallet over, but their intent seemed less generous than that and my girlfriend was with me. Their intent about her was clear. Of course, if you are going to carry a weapon, you better know how to use it... Situations vary so much, it is difficult to say what one should and should not do. Excellent advice here including dummy wallets and phones, confusing your attacker, complying when it works... The key skill in these situations is the ability to assess what it happening and the real intent of the "muggers". Do they really only want your wallet? Then hand it over. However, if their intent is otherwise, what are you going to do? Take a beating? Be raped? The ability to read people is a primary one here. When teaching women (and men) rape prevention, one of the best techniques is to pee your own pants. Unless you have the one-in-a-million person who finds that nice, it usually stops the rape from happening. What other deterrents exist that we often do not think of? What other tricks - like the mind confusing response of Paul to his potential attacker - could we use in this type of situation to avoid injury (to us and perhaps also to our "attacker") if, perhaps, handing over the money doesn't work... |
