Hi folks,
While on a business trip recently I entertained the hotel staff with some close up magic. Now they want me to do a show for the whole staff.....but I do close up not stage. I would like to do it as a) they are a nice bunch and b) it would push my boundaries. I am not going back until January so I have a little time. Any suggestions? Effects I do are: ACM The last trick of Dr Daley Professors Nightmare Thom Peterson's ESP your pants (a mentalism, chance or fate routine using ESP cards) Dai Vernon's Twisting the aces Sponge Balls Thom Peterson's "the known" ...a card is forced and an 8 ball falls from the deck Crazy Man's Handcuffs Alan Wong's Stargazer Ring on ribbon, ring to wallet. Many thanks, Danny |

I think that Professor's Nightmare and the sponge balls would be good to keep. If you find a big enough ring, you could come up with a ring and rope routine.
Basically, try to keep away from everything that is smaller than your hand (besides sponge balls; those are always a keeper). If you want, you could try to find some jumbo cards, although that limits a lot of sleights. Try to find some Linking Rings, Cups and Balls stuff like those that are tested and trued. |

Professors Nightmare is great for a palour stage trick I have done it on stage and it works OK. Sponge Balls are a goer and you can get larger balls if you feel the need. Thom Peterson's "the known" sound a interesting effect and think if it could work to a lager crowd I don’t know if this helps but a larger deck might be a option also a volunteer holding a metal plate could make the ball dropping more dramict.
Hope this helps.
Enjoy your magic,

You could do a Monte routine or card warp with jumbo cards.
Ring and rope routines.

Thanks folks,
I am beginning to have a planned set for a stage show....though I wonder how many tricks I need for 30-45 minutes (I know how long is a piece of string). My other big question is ....how do I rehearse it? For my close up stuff after I have rehearsed at home I try it on friends, workmates and at charity events....stage, that sounds harder. After the at home rehearsal stage how does one rehearse a stage show? Many thanks, Danny |

Danny,
10 to 12 tricks are more than plenty for a 30 to 45 min show. As far as performing you can do the tricks for friends and family the same as close up to make sure you have the handlings perfected. Once that is done set up in a larger room in your house with mirrors and video cameras. Run through the show naturally, then watch the video and disect it. Where are you standing, what gestures are you making, are you staying in one place or are you using the whole stage, etc. Once you get it worked out run through a few times with marks to hit. Then after you are comfortable tape it again, if it goes well move the camera to different angles and run through again. The great thing is, once you have it worked out, you have a developed stage show that you just run through a couple times to keep fresh and its always at the ready if anyone asks. |
