How many people that use birds for their act, treat them like normal pets when your not practicing or doing a show with them? Iv gotten mixed signals about this topic.
Me personally, id want to treat them like my normal pets and spend time with and play with them as much as possible even when I'm not practicing. However some say, they are used for magic, and that's what you should only be doing with them. I dunno. That sounds like they are toys at that point, and you put them away when your done with your toys. eek. |

A person that wants to become a successful magician, practices and rehearses his act and material 2 hours every day. Thus the birds will never be left alone and ignored. This time is set aside, just like going to a regualar job. It has to become or made a part of your life.
Just as excerise is made a regular part of ones life, so is rehearsal of a magic act. This is also how many performers come up with new ideas and ways of handling props and presenting their material. It is a life commentment, performance magic and animals alike. |

To me they are living tools. They are treated well, but not like family pets. More like good husbandry.
Derek, you also want to be very careful about how much time you spend with them in the confines of your home. This can be dangerous, even deadly to you and other humans in the house/apartment. |

I hear its bad for you. Is that like over a course of 5 yeas or 5 days? I plan on having them in my livingroom of my apartment at night for the next few days until I get their cage built at practice studio

Derek, a few days won't make any difference. It's the extended time that becomes a problem. There's no way to tell if it's 6 months, a year or several years but the danger is there.

I always hear of the danger but what is the danger? Is it best to keep them out of living areas or as long as the cage is clean is it ok?
I use a couple of parakees in my act and keep them in a family room where its easy for me to get to them.

The birds can affect you in different ways. Two of the most common culprits are dander and feces. Your lungs are the most susceptible to problems caused by both. Here are some other threads (thanks to Dynamike)that address the issue in various ways:

Leland, the dander disease is called histoplasmosis. Parakeets do not spread dander like doves or at least not as much. When a human breathes in the dust, it can cause the disease which can be life threatening. Keeping the cage clean is a good start but every time the dove moves, it sheds dander which fills the air. Ideally, you don't want to live in the same room with doves and you want good circulation. Sometimes it is adviseable to have a Hepa filtration system running.

If you use a purifier like I do then you don't have to worry! I use a product from http://www.rabbitair.com its specifically meant for animal dander and more! but our animals are both performers and pets! we incorporate playtime with tricks and make a game out of it! it keeps them stimulated and playful at the same time!
