I thought I would reference some material that may not be known by others who desire to tackle the Manipulation of large 3" coins. Big seems to be the of more interest today then the normal manipulation items of years ago. As it should, because it is one more thing to draw attention to the performer.
The old MUM Magazine published by SAM had a 1 page explanation of Jumbo Coin moves, sorry, I don't have the reference for Vol, issue or page currently. Abbott's Magic Company publishes 3-books-in-one of routines by Robert Olson called "EXTRA", all this material has been published in the New Tops Magazine previously. The Jumbo Coin routines is covered 21 pages of excellent material with jumbo metal coins. Jeff McBride has some excellent material with the production of Jumbo 3" plastic coins in his Manipulation DVD series. Tony Clark has an instant download of a short jumbo coin manipulation sequence with a silk scarf. Levent has a nice way to use a jumbo coin as a load for other objects in his stage act DVD. Levent also covers some very nice jumbo coin material in his Miser's Dream DVD set. None of this material is repeat effects, except maybe the pop up production from a scarf. Anyone desiring to pursue this form of Manipulation would do well to get all of this material. If anyone knows of other material not mentioned, please list. |

Gary Kurtz has some material in the book, "Unexplainable Acts". Some of this is also covered on the video, "Let's Get Flurious".
Jerry Mentzer has a book called, "Super Cents", but I do not know if that contains any stand-up material, or if it is close-up only.

Thanks Michael, I forgot about Gary Kurtz, I have the book, but not the video.
A quick search show the video is not on DVD and is still available, will have to get that at once. It is a super routine, but I had problems learning it from the book. |

Prices vary a lot from place to place. There is even a better giant coin available today. Gary's looked like a metal disk, but they now have coins from 5" to 10" size, they are of course in the $100 price range. |

Jokers will include the instructions on how to perform the effect. Imagine starting with a US jumbo coin. Next, change it into a Chinese coin on stage using manipulation. Next, perform the 3 color change with the jumbo Chinese coin. With manipulation it can be changed into a new coin or vanished. There are videos on Youtube showing Jumbo Colored Coins.

There are three or four great effects with 3" jumbo coins on the DVD called Coins! by Michael Lair. He also has a routine on DVD called Big Coins! in which a large coin jumps from hand to hand, changes into a burst of silver confetti, then into a 25' (25 foot) reuseable coil. This material is straight from the Coins! DVD but it includes all the necessary materials.

When I bought the Michael Lair book with coins, he only provided 2" coins.
Michael Lair is very creative, but his material is what I consider unfinished. I seen him live and he performs the tricks just as he writes and instructs in the book. What I consider unfinished, is he does not give or worked out the 'getting into' the effect. Much of his material suffers from this incomplete routining of sequences. So it is like have a trick that only has a middle, no beginning and no end. He has some really great ideas, but to try to incorporate them into another persons act, is very difficult, IMHO anyway. |

I can see where you are coming from, but the way I see it is that it leaves the creation open for interpretation. Yes, I do agree that he could have been more specific in some areas of the work, and maybe given some ideas on how to get into each piece, as you said. This may have made it more complete in some ways, but as they stand, it kind of forces one to get creative on their own.
As for his material, I do not use all of it but what bits I do perform are not complete - they are just small bits/sections/moves of or from the different routines that work here and there in my act. |

Fred Kaps' work with jumbo coins was the best I've seen. Chanin's was super simple and I loved it.

Pete - are there videos (instructional or otherwise) of the Jack Chanin material available? I have only heard of his work with jumbo coins and have never actually seen it - but I would like to.

The only large coin item I now of was a trick he sold called 'Flying Saucers', these were 3 metal disc riveted together. The instructions sheet had very little understandable directions. Chanin was famous for demonstrating a trick one way, and selling a trick with very little instruction on how he presented it. Most dealers stayed clear of his tricks he manufactured and sold. There is a book available of some of his material, it is a reprint of his 4 or so booklets on the Color Changing Silk and his methods for Sleeving. I don't know if any large disk or coin work is mentioned in the book. |
