Doing so will complete a circuit connection and send high voltages through the line. Thank you!" After about ten or twenty seconds, the phone rings again. And keeps ringing. Until the person finally gets tired of it and picks it up, whereupon they hear a blood curdling scream through the earpiece, then the line goes silent. Caller ID has kind of put a stop to most phone pranks these days.

When I got my first phone the number they gave me was in the book under the name of a local bar. P!ssed off wives wouldn't believe my situation when they called looking for their husbands so I started making up clever ways of getting even. One of my favorites was to tell them, "He's in the can right now but he's would like to talk to his date?" Usually they'd cuss and hang up but if they said yes I'd pretend to talk to someone then say that she won't come to the phone.

Calling a bowling alley:
Q: Do you have 16 lb. balls? A: Yes. Q: Are they hard to walk with? ... Calling a grocery store: Q: Do you have pop there? A: Yes. Q-response: Well, have him come to the phone; Mom wants to talk to him.

You used to be able to send away for a course in ventriloquism with some little piece of tin or something that if you put it in your mouth in a certain place would (supposedly) make it easy to "throw your voice." Never worked for me.
