I don't begrudge folks who were in the service a day of recognition; however I think it's important to remember that the original reason for this day was to celebrate the end of a war, the coming back to a normalization of peace. It would be nice if we could also dedicate one day in the year to thinking about how to keep wars from happening without depending on the military.

It would be nice if we could also dedicate one day in the year to thinking about how to keep wars from happening without depending on the military. Preventing the costs of war is what you mean. Having a strong military is part of this equation as it is simply human nature that when there is a perception of weakness it invites aggression. A strong military is part of the solution to preventing the costs of war. There are other things that are necessary to implement in addition to having a strong military in order to prevent the costs of war. A soldier's job is primarily the mission of peace and his job is train hard and be prepared to fight and win a war, which enhances deterrence and keeps the peace. That does not mean, however, that military power should be abused. It is very dangerous to abuse military power and there are very serious consequences for abusing military power. Military power should be used only as a last resort and to achieve quick victory to avoid a long, drawn out, protracted and costly war. These kinds of wars have astronomical costs and the military along with the civilian authorities need to be diligent in not allowing an enemy to draw us into long, drawn out, protracted and costly wars. Ultimately, the top brass in the military and the civilian authorities should be working daily on strategies to prevent the costs of war, assure national survival and that national interests are met without ever having to fight at all. And that's the acme of skill, to "win without fighting" and "winning without fighting" is also the most profitable way to carry on with war. Fighting simply cost a lot of money and lives. So the top brass's stakeholders are the taxpayers and by preventing the costs of war, it profits the taxpayers greatly. "It is only one who is thoroughly acquainted with the evils of war which can thoroughly understand the profitable way of carrying it on" as Sun Tzu once wrote and the most profitable way to carrying it on is to "subdue the enemy without fighting" to win without fighting through prevention strategies.
