I've got Seth Godin (both his blog and his Domino Project) and Scott Ginsberg (The Nametag Guy) on my Google Reader. Seth often has good and very challenging thoughts (sometimes, though, I have no clue where he's "coming from"!). One of his recent posts that helped me put some things into focus was this one:
http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/......ong.html (I don't have a "long tail" - I have NOW, and then I need to go looking again. That clarification simply helped me sort out some of his posts into ones that I can use and why and others that don't apply to me.) Ed |

How is a guy supposed to talk to you privately if you list no email address and accept no PM's?

Ed, I believe I gave examples in marketing to/for Family Shows. Thank you, Wmhegbli, for the helping hand. Clear and obvious - unlike the fog I get reading through some of these library books. Some of them talk like I should simply know all of this and go do "something"; others are full of concepts I don't know what to do with. I wish I had the time to get that MBA, but all I have is time enough to occasionally read and ask questions. I do appreciate the boost. Ed |

Ed. I read your post and decided to Google you and see how your marketing is going.
We have talked about the use of real names on the Café in the past and it is obvious that you thought changing your name on the Café would not matter as demonstrated by the fact that you are still using it. So the results that came up includes a post you made in a thread; I clicked on it and your post came up; here it is, you may perfrom a search yourself and see the results. “The Magic Café Forums - Alternative to double lift? http://www.themagiccafe.com › ... › New to magic? 30 posts - 21 authors - Last post: Oct 4 Ed Millis is a Yuma Magician, doing Magic Shows in AZ.” Ed I gotta tell you, that if I were a potential client, Goggled you, followed the results here and looked at the picture you have uploaded, there would be no way I would allow you in my home, or near my children after viewing the photo you have chosen to use. I am not posting this to embarrass you. I would only suggest that you change the photo if you’re going to use your own name here. Just my opinion, other opinions may vary. |

Howie... I went and looked for Ed as well..
I set my location to Yuma and proxied to a more local IP to there.. dumped cookies.. blah blah blah (Basically I made it so Google thought I was a person in that area looking for Ed... "OFF TOPIC: Wait did I just bore myself with techno babble.. DANGIT my wife is right.. BAHHH") Ed's Webiste is the 1st 4 links (The search was Ed Millis) GOOD JOB ED then I saw this... http://d11317960.u78.c7.ixwebhosting.com/ (not good as its duplicate content) and then the Café... but why I am replying and why I find HUMOR in this.. check out the topic that shows first The Magic Café Forums - Invisible to Google - I've got 48 hours! http://www.themagiccafe.com › ... › Tricky business LOL.. on the front page of Google.. I thought that page was totally gone, Mike!
Any chance it's just a old cached page? BTW - what happens if you search just "magic Yuma" or "magician Yuma"? (I'm working on capturing "Birthday Magic Yuma" as well.) Howie: I note your concerns about the photo. I'm working on a different one. (I'm working on a lot of stuff - it's just slow going!!) Ed |

I think one thing that is being overlooked here is that customers/clients are BENEFIT driven and MOST magicians are FEATURES driven. Our customers don't want a magician, they want everyone to have fun and to feel great seeing all the kids laughing and enjoying themselves.
Try to do ALL your marketing from THEIR point of view, and give em what they want! That's a small thing to remember but it amazes me how much I STILL see features without benefits listed on a website or a sales piece. |

Another way of saying it, "people don't buy 'what' you do, they buy 'why' you do it."
Worth thinking about for sure. Ed, when I search "magic Yuma" and "magician Yuma," you number one on both. The Café post is on the second page. Tom

Ed will always come up on the first page of a Google search, Ed is the only magician in Yuma; if you’re the only magician in a city and you can’t come up on the first page, something is drastically wrong.
If a potential customer wanted to see more about Ed than his website and with further research came across the Magic café post, weather the link was on a first page or second page, it would be daunting if they discovered the photo. I have spoken with Ed on the telephone; his voice is not at all like his photo on the café. One Picture is worth a thousand words. |
