Although I am a little late to this party, I have to say that I was surprised at many of the responses to the original question. I would have thought that a company of entertainers and performers, no less magicians in particular, whose livelihood as well as whose artistic passion derive from artifice and deception, would have shown more appreciation for the artfully presented woman.
I write not of "cosmesis obliterans" as it was diagnosed by one of my masters of the care of the heart, years ago, but I am decidedly an admirer of a woman who exhibits style, knowing as she must that the most erogenous part of the human being is the mind. The deliberate and artful presentation of self conveys an understanding of the intricacies of interaction, and I find make-up, perfume, and style in all things very appealing. I am reminded of a cartoon one of my first loves displayed; on the left, a little girl was seated before her peignoir, with brushes and bottles and tubes upon it; "Plaire aux hommes, c'est du travail!" she was saying. And on the right, a little boy, in knee pants, was standing freshly coiffed and neatly dressed, holding a bouquet and a box of chocolates. His compleynt: "Plaire aux femmes, ca coute cher!" And of course, despite their formidable armament, we refer to the most ponderous battleships of the line as "she" because it costs so much to keep them in powder and paint! Best wishes for a Happy New Year to all! W. |

Back in 1984 I dated a woman who wore tons of make up. It looked OK, but every time I would kiss her, or we were intimate I would get some on myself which I did not like. I used to beg her not to wear so much make up. One day, she did me a favor. I went to pick her up and she was wearing none.
We have to keep in mind I was barely out of my teens and not the nice man I am today. I immediately told her to put it back on. I did not say that she was ugly without it. but she got the message loud and clear. No intimacy for me that night and for sure it was our last date. I should not have done what I did, but it confirmed her feeling that she was not pretty, and anytime I saw her in the future, she was covered in the stuff.

If a woman is "artfully presented" with make-up, especially when it is flamboyant and theatrical, I can quite like it, but I find in the great majority of cases it seems that women are not artfully presented but use concealer and foundation as a mask in a most unappetising way. |

Happy New Year, jugglestruck! You'll get no argument from me on that, although like the best magic, there is no need in my opinion for flamboyant theatricality.

I started wearing makeup at 14 , lipgloss and mascarra. I'm still wear makeup and it's never occurred to me in all these years that I was doing it to please men or women - only pleasing myself.
Mascarra enhances the eyelashes and if one happens to be born with light lashes the effect with mascarra to darken and thicken them looks nice. Rouge can enhance the structures of the face - conturing it to give the effect of cheekbones. Some use it to give color to their cheeks but that's not really what it's meant for. Personally I haven't used that stuff since my teens. Admittedly I find some people put far too much on and it gives the impression of a clown or looks especially garish if elderly women have applied thickly. I'm absolutely sold on creams as they provide PF protection from UV rays. Most dermatologist recommend that daycream should have at least 15% but I use those that have 60%. While I was never the type to lay out into the sun I am outdoorsy and have had a lot of sun exposure. Some products have more PF than others and it is reflected in the price. This is considered makeup but no one would know someone is wearing it. Some are tinted to match the color of the face while others are transparent. I'd probably have skin cancer by now if I hadn't been wearing the stuff. My mom even tho she is getting on in age has beautiful porceline skin and while she's never worn makeup has always used cream. Lastly, eyeshadow..yup I wear that too, although not always. My eyes are really green and certain colors on the lid (like plum) can even enhance the color further. So there you have it...I have never not worn makeup as it's part of my routine just like getting up and getting dressed in the morning. Whether I'm on stage or running my animal sanctuary wearing rubber boots and scooping poop - I wear makeup and it's only to please myself and no one else. |
