Hi,
I want to create my firm mentasism act but I'm not sure if I suppose to use any music for it. Can you please share your point of view. I want to create mysterious atmoshere during the show. Can you advise some good music for this kind of show. Many thanks, Marcin |

Why wouldn't you use music? When possible, use music before the show, while volunteers make their way to the stage, during intermission (if there is one) and during your final bow. I'm afraid I can't help you with your music selection but it sounds like you know what kind of atmosphere you're trying to create. Why not Google search "mysterious music" and see what comes up?

Thanks Mike,
This is what I wanted to do but what about music durring the show? Do you think is good to add some quiet music as a background to each effect ar it's better to do it withour any music? I was also thinking to create some special soundtrack which will announce my appearance in mysterious way. Marcin |

Soft music can be good in this case.

Music can enhance a mentalism show if used properly. If overused, however, it can make the whole thing seem overly theatrical and, hence, less believable. Using music during the effects can also be a distraction.
Good thoughts, Bob |

Aside: I use music but there is a subtle other thing to watch for which when I got really into the theatrical side and stage shows I noticed - the music can set YOUR rhythm ie the speed of your talk, your walk and so on unless you guard against it of you plan to use it - it's truly a cool thing to use once you get the hang of it because it can create emotional charges - consider making a film and you'll know what I mean.
In short yes use it but learn how to use it - just like blocking, lighting and so on

Music is one element that can create theater, emotion of a variety of types, and can add a level to the experience and enhance a performance. It's been mentioned before but think of a movie like Titanic or even something more fun like Forrest Gump or Austin Powers and how the music enhances the overall way it plays to the audience and creates an overall feel. The real issue is knowing how and when to use music in a mentalism performance. In Paul Stockman's performance he created for his Connected DVD, music is used to enhance several segments of the show creating drama. It can also be used for comedy, energy, sexy, mystical, a segment with kids, and to showcase a tone or mood. I use music in every show from introduction and traveling music, to several segments and features throughout the show, and the finale and ending travel. |

Music. Definitely.
Well chosen music is always a great accent. Use it carefully though...and use it for a REASON. I recently watched a magician perform. There was music under EVERYTHING. It was there when he was talking with his volunteer. It was there when he was doing his effects...and it was actually horrid. The wall of sound simply turned the audience off. But a well chosen musical bit can easily lift a very good effect into a GREAT performance. David

You will never know 'til you. The best to do is give it a try. Keep track of how things play. You will have to be your own judge.

Mentalism--NO, not in a one-man show.
Mentalism bordering on /or Bizzarre effects-Definitely a big YES. |

Agreeing with all the above. I depends on the show, the performer and the mood you want to set. It can add or subtract, also its absence can be powerful as well. As a piece of trivia, consider this: in the movie Cast Away, after the Elvis song at the beginning, there was NO MUSIC until after Hanks got off the island, over an hour and a half later. Pretty effective, yes?
...what if I could read your mind?

It depends on your style. I prefer to use music if there is an option to do it, but I don't plan my show to be on sync with music or anything.
Also it really depends on the music. I like to use instrumental, hypnotic, suitable music with really low volume so it doesn't interfere with the show but glues it together and gives me some rhythm to pace with. |

I use to use music. I thought it did add to the performance when used correctly. However, it became a hassle after a while hauling a sound system, cueing etc. Not to mention ASCAP and other problems. These days I just like to not only pack light but not have to worry so much about other issues besides my set pieces. If I can get a microphone alone to work I consider it a very good start to my show.

Also, just like I've worked with a director, a visual artist and other stage and tech people for certain shows - consider using a sound and music tech once to get what is really required and get some insight from someone who does this all the time

I like music to walk on to. Once I am on, the music is off. But I am tone deaf, so music means nothing to me in any case. I just use it to add drama to my entrance. For all I care, it could be a drum roll or a pneumatic drill.
I do find that acts which speak over low music don't appeal to me anywhere near as much as acts that address me directly, with no sound track.

Decomposed and Dr. Spektor have both hit on something pretty key here I think. Music brings in a whole other level of challenges to putting a show together. From the rights to use the music, to the extra gear and possibly crew members. I have been involved with theatre for many years (both performing and on the tech side) and sometimes things do not always read the same from the audience as they do on the stage. You also need to be prepared for the sound you are expecting not to happen when you expect it to. There is nothing that destroys a mood more then a missed sound cue and a surprised reaction from the performer.
All that being said, I do think music can add a lot to a show. It just has to be done with care. David J |

Good points David. I think these days my persona is more of a speaker of sorts. I present my material more as an impromptu living room performance. Hard to put down in words but I try to portray someone who is doing an series of experiments (lack of better word) and I do not even know if its going to work. It puts me more in position with the audience and watching. I use all the empathy I can muster in my shows and by the time its over, Im thoroughly exhausted with an adrenline dump to follow. At first I never intended to do this, it just happened and it worked for me. Music now would not enhance my act at this point. I think it works great for others and boy did I use it at one time.
Im sure if I ever do HUGE stage performances, music would be more of a necessity. Decomp

Music just gets in the way. As soon as you start using music, you are a performer not a mind reader. I guess if you like your mental magic...go ahead use some music. If you want to seem organic and real...stay away.
