I remember seeing this illusion live back in 1993. Anyone know who the builder of this vertical sawing is?

Still not a fan of the boxes getting pushed together before opening the second box. Drives me nuts..

Chris...Do you think he choreographed the illusion in this way to negate the "Too-Perfect Theory"?

Keith,
The Pushing together of the boxes are indeed intentional as a form of misdirection. It can be done without this moment, but would telegraph toward method, so they added that bit for reasons you've mentioned. Something often overlooked on this piece. I'm quite fond of this effect. I was able to see this live when dreams and nightmares was touring, before it was on TV. Was interesting to see his new magic live before I had seen it on TV first. |

I remember seeing this live a couple of times in 1994 and he didn't push the boxes together briefly... he also opened both sides at the same time. Then saw it again in early 1995 and he had reworked the routine to the televised version.

I saw it both ways as well, Irish_Matt.
It's all in the reflexes.

Illucifer: Just curious: seeing it early in development, was any of them better than the other? I realize this was some time ago.

I saw one of the first performances of The Blade in 1993. Yes, both boxes were open at the same time and there was no "bump" move. The one thing I really liked about the early version was the girl's eyes remained open and she moved her arms around. I've heard a lot of laymen saying while watching the special, "she's a mannequin."

I just remember being impressed that he could hang on to that hook when being lifted up to the top of the illusion.

He has the help of a circus style wrist loop with a safety on it.

I also remember the assistant being much more animated, much like Eyes of darkness mentioned...
