You come to a point in your life when you really don't care what people think about you, you just care what you think about yourself.

I have a sword that was used in the civil war and a couple bayonets for other wars, including one that was possibly used in germany during WWII. I know that Harley has a head hunters swords and quite a few other swallowers have blades from different wars. And I'll tell you that I don't think about it much at all. Yes, it is possible/very likely that what I'm swallowing could have been used to end someone's life, and it could possibly end mine. It's history. I don't feel weird or bad about it, if anything, it adds.

There are swords, and then there are swords. Swordsmiths never made the whole thing. The swordsmith made the main component, the blade and tang. Each piece of the sword furniture was made by a skilled master craftsman individually. Then the components were assembled by yet another master of the trade. It would take maybe a year or so to make the final product. Hollywood has romanticized the making of a sword very innaccurately, showing a smith making the sword from ore to finished product (which would have never happened). The original purpose of swords were for combat. Then there are ceremonial swords that were made for knighting and such, these swords have had gems set in them and no sharp edge. Then there are decoration swords as of late. Stainless steel was invented in India and first used in swords so that when someone got cut by one, they wouldn't get a nasty infection. Okay, that was a joke a middle school teacher told me. The stainless swords I make are made specifically for you performers to swallow. They are made of full soft 300 series austenitic stainless, rounded edges and round tip. It would be almost impossible for someone to use my swords to kill. OTOH I have made and sold dozens of hand forged custom knives with VERY sharp edges and made of high carbon martensitic steel, hardened and tempered. These knives sell for hundreds of dollars and can hurt someone very easily. I have no consience whatsoever if one of my works of art are used for evil purposes. What someone chooses to do with it is up to the buyer. Would Home Depot have a problem or be liable when someone uses a screwdriver to stab someone in the neck? (that happened recently). Anvilfire.com is a smithing site I contribute to, there is a huge article we reference young 'uns to when they pop in saying how they want to make a sword. Check it out, there is a TON of information here-> http://www.anvilfire.com/21centbs/armor/......king.htm
