Seems like it finally caught up with him. While he seemed very personable he thought he was above the law and the system. Enjoy the free meals and board for the next 10 to 12 years Rod you are really deserving.
I just wish we would see more of this kind of justice.
If I were to agree with you. Then we would both be wrong. As of Apr 5, 2015 10:26 pm I have 880 posts. Used to have over 1,000

Yes, there's a whole cadre of Wall Street Executives that need to go where Blagojevich is going

The doc gets 2 years for killing Wacko Jacko, guy gets 5-7 years for raping a little girl and Blago gets 14 years trying to sell a Senate seat to Jesse Jackson, JR.
What's wrong with that picture?

I understand the the average sentence for a sex offender in Illinois is 9.7 years. While I agree that Blagojevich certainly deserves jail time, this sentence is, in my mind, far too excessive. His political career is through and his reputation is shot. He doesn't present a danger to the community. It seems to me that a sentence of a year or so would be far more appropriate in the circumstances.

"He doesn't present a danger to the community."
I believe his predecessor is also serving time for corruption. when people lose their faith in their elected officials, it has a devastating effect on democracy. When you elect 2 governors and both end up in prison, then I don't think any sentence is too harsh. If chicago politicians can't curb their corruption, then it is time to give them an example of what is going to happen to them. He should have gotten life. |

So you think it is equitable that sex offenders (who definitely are a danger to the community) get 9.7 years but Blago should get life?
Make no mistake, what Blago did was wrong and he should be punished. But the incredible disparity in sentencing seems unjust to me. |

I don't think it's equitable, but I do think that Bill makes a good point; there's an intangible effect on society that goes beyond the immediate consequences of what any one corrupt official may do.
Of course, part of the disparity may be that the sentence for sex offenders is too short, not just that the sentence for political corruption is too long. I do tend to think that 14 years is too long, but I also think that 1 year is too short. The potential rewards for political corruption are inherently high, and I think that potential risks need to be made sufficiently high to deter other aspirants. Did you have experience in celebrity or other high profile cases, Bob? It seems to me that it's harder to get a conviction, but if you do, the sentences may be disproportionately high (for serious crimes, that is; Hollywood types get slapped on the wrist for multiple misdemeanors all day long). But that could be a misperception from a limited sample size that's on my radar.

I think there is a problem with the 9.7 number. I think that Illinois was trying to pass longer sentences, but it fell through recently.
Lobo thanks on the nobel try.

Lobo-
My clients were run of the mill defendants, not celebrities by any means. But the offenses they were often charged with were very serious. The way I see it, though, is that celebrities, when convicted of very serious offenses, are often subject to higher sentences because of a perceive need by many judges to "set an example." It's something that has to be taken into consideration when deciding whether or not to accept a plea bargain. Good thoughts, Bob |

I think it's true that the other offenders should get stiffer sentences. Not-so-hot-Rod getting a decade or so in a country club for being a traitor to his country doesn't seem so stiff though.

It is a stiff sentence considering it is a politician. With a guaranteed 10 year plus sentence and not in a country club prison, it excessive, especially for Illinois. In NJ you get less time and collect on a couple of pensions at the same time.
When will they go after Jesse Jackson, JR? How about never?

Ol Jessie has his own troubles.
But as for 10 years lets consider that when a public official is corrupt it has an impact on all of us. I think that Chicago is a swamp of it and it needs to be taken on. This sort of thing must have ol Rod confused because it is simply business as usual. Now that the country gets a pretty hard look at how Chicago works and how it works when you try it on a national level maybe it will happen. When public trust is breached by elected official or public servant I think that it should be pretty stern sentence. For those who seem to weep for Rod and his 10 years, what do you think should happen to cops who do things with the color of authority? IF guilty they deserve harsher punishments than those who are not in such a position of trust. I don't see the Wall Street connection but if that is where your hatred lies then cool. But what about a congressman who is allowed to use insider information that one of those Wall Street guys would be in jail for?

That congresspeople are legally allowed to trade on insider information is about as corrupt as it comes.

Always was and will be. And the congress trading on insider info...equivalent to thieves handfeeding thieves. Just another way to keep everyone in line and crooked.

Landmark thank you. The problem you have though is that they ONLY WANT TO PROTEST THE OTHER SIDE! Nobody gives a whip if it happens and their side is guilty! Just so it is their party in charge, they are willing to let it go and look the other way when they find taxes not paid and then they are suddenly Treasury Secretary. (And there are PLENTY of examples of this from the elephant group as well lets not list all of them. I hope we can just concede that this is rampant in POLITICS.)
People want to rail against people they disagree with and let people who share their own beliefs slide a bit. I mean it is SO important we find out every little detail about these guys in this primary, but not so much when it is someone we agree with. One side says getting a bad guy is the be all and end all, and when the side gets him not even a "great job the country is grateful" but rather a "eh.. big deal". The problem is that once they get INTO government there is no party lines any more. They don't care. They make great moneyand the are taken over by the livestyle. It is pathetic and somehow it has to change. Hopefully people start to see it for what it is and as the book says THROW THEM ALL OUT!
