Hello people! I've never quite been able to find myself a nice silk/handkerchief for coin effects. Usually I end up using table cloths or cotton hankerchiefs with odd designs.
By any chance is there a term/site where I can order a nice silk handkerchief that has a touch of class? P.S. The one David Roth uses in his NYCS looks great! |

Any magic shop will carry a good silk.

Most of the silks they offer seems to be a little thin! Something like those you would vanish in a thumbtip, or the one david stone uses in his bottle production. They crease easily and they just don't seem to fall as smoothly. Tom Stone seems to use quite a nice silk hanky too.

Amazon sells nice silk handkerchiefs by Royal Silk. I purchased a handful a couple years ago mostly for coin magic. Nice and opaque.

You want a large men's pocket square (16 inch, not the 10 inch) I have bought several from here and the quality is excellent along with a great price. You will find a great variety of colors; I think darker colors to provide contrast with the coins, YMMV.

Here's one used by the Godfather Vinny, as used in a great effect.

Vinny's silk used to be available at formal shops.
Once I hit the mother lode at the Salvation Army store. More than a dozen 18" hand stitched pure silks in various colors for a buck each. Sal's is one of my favorite magic shops.

Check out http://www.fabricmanipulation.com and give Lynetta a call. Tell her what you would like and she can help you. She does not offer plain, ungimmicked silks on her site, but if you talk to her she will be more than happy to provide you with what you need. Just as a note, the silks she makes her products with is a heavier jacquard silk, which is very nice, opaque and it stands up to use. Other than that, the resources listed above are also very good!

I looked around a lot and the best option is (as Tedski said) a 16-inch mens silk pocket square. Anything less than 16" is too small. A good formalwear store, or department store, should sell them. The sort of place that sells evening dress, or bespoke suits. Used shops/charity shops are a good option, and very cheap, but it takes time to find anything useable. You'll need to keep your eyes open over several visits. Don't be shy about looking in the ladies' section; men's silks are a little rare so they seem to get put in with the women's scarves. I bought my best silk hanks from a formalwear store, they're about $20 each (real silk is expensive). I went for a totally plain design. You can go $60 and up for a really fancy designer one.
Other things to watch out for are a different pattern/texture on opposite sides, or a border or pattern that highlights the fold. I've had hanks that were useless for some effects because of these things. So you really need to check them out in person, and maybe even walk through the effect so you can see how the hank looks when it's folded. Good luck! And if you find a good one, please post and tell us where you got it! |

There is a men's clothing store chain in Houston called Jos A Banks, and they periodically run a "buy 1 get 2 free" sale on everything in the store. I picked up 3 high quality 16" silk hanks for the price of 1 during a sale like that. I expect this isn't the only store / chain to do this, keep an eye out in your area.
