I recently purchased a used trick - it's a jigsaw puzzle and volunteer picks a piece out of a box of random puzzle pieces - and it matches the missing piece to a pre-assembled puzzle. It's not such a good trick - but it gave me a better idea how to make the trick better - but using the basic delivery of this purchased (used) trick.
My question is - if I make a new trick, which was inspired by this purchased trick - can I use it in my show? - You can also assume I will NOT resell the purchased trick (and therefore any "rights") that come with the trick. I'm NOT looking to sell this - just use "my version" in my shows.. Thanks David

I always followed a self rule of being able to alter a prop I had paid for to suit my needs better. I have enlarged props for stage performances, and I have even redesigned props. I don't see anything personally wrong with that as long as you are not marketing it. If it's worth marketing, best to find out who the maker is and try to get some form of consent. That will save you tremendous headaches.

I've never used a purchased prop per its instructions, and regularly alter almost everything to suit the needs of my show. Once you've bought it you can alter it any way you like.

You can and should alter it. Well done for having good standards.
