I was contacted by phone and email to audition for AGT next month. I was told I would not have to wait in line and it would be a private audition right in to the producers. I am flattered with the contact and plan on going (even though is a drive) for the experience but just wanted to see if anyone here has auditioned before. I perform mentalism and wondering if I will have a volunteer to use. If I am on a stage and far away from everyone, not sure how this would workout. I would think I could use the producers for the audition then if I did happen to be picked to be on the show, deal with it then.
Thanks G-ani

Disregard, got my answer. I did not know all entertainers in every audtion city received these private invites. I guess if you do not receive an invite, best look at your marketing.
Seems only someone without a job would audition.

They've been begging me for four years now to do this show with promises and guarantees, etc. Some here may bite, but I looked into it initially and in my opinion between them wanting your best stuff, wanting approaval and bigger and better each week, adapting it for televison, and then turning over the rights to your material and performance, it was an easy no for me. Plus just due to the way their system and judging works, both mentalism and hypnosis (I was sought after for both) would not play well in this forum in my opinion.
But with that said, some here (a few) will more than likely attempt it, more than likely have problems or a bad experience and will be here in four months writing about it. Stay tuned... |

True! I too have been contacted but oddly last year I actually decided to pursue it but they did not want me after all.
why - they said they saw all the illusions I have done before (but not my routines) but they don't care if you do the sub trunk they don't want it as they saw some one else do it already so I pitched my close up magic and his words are to me "we don't want close up" "we only want someone that can do big stuff, the bigger the better" so that is that and back to work for me which is fine as I would most likely had lost biz by spend ing time with AGT LOL good luck to any one that goes. be prepared to do what my buddy Michael Grasso did - spend a fortune on big stuff so you have some thing new each week! the sad thing is that this show is not really a talent contest at all! sam

I have said it before but it bares repeating. It is not a talent show it is a TV show. ALL decisions are therfore predicated upon making good TV and not necessarily making the performer look good.
As a matter of fact making the performer look good is at times diametrically opposed with their goals. This does not make them evil or anything of the sort. It just may not make them the best vehicle for magicians.

Reminds me of the gong show of yesteryear. Thanks to all here, why I love this place so much.
Anyway I contacted a big stage illusionist in my town, he has performed at the Castle etc and they did not contact him, at least not yet. I do mentalism and hypnosis, wonder why they contacted me. I would love to audition for the experience, no hopes or dreams but to sign a 43 page contract, have to travel for weeks etc, I cannot do that. Guess Im not starstruck afterall. G-ani

Season 2 made Terry Fator a star in Vegas. Without using Google, can you tell me who won the other five seasons and where they are now?
...exactly. Hence what Danny says is spot on. It's not a talent competition, it's a TV show.

I got a call from some AGT scout yesterday. The guy on the phone seemed VERY surprized that I wasn't interested in his offer for fame. I simply thanked him for the call, wished him a happy holiday then ended the conversation. For those performers that have the "TV Show" type acts I say go for it 1000%! For the rest of us, we are better off doing what we do best. I have a very successful corporate show...but that does not mean it would translate to TV. My "Silk 2 Egg" is killer in the banquet room of a Hilton for a corporate holiday party. However, on the AGT stage they want to see a 747 appear!
I only wish more individuals in our field would take the time to really evaluate their acts before doing shows like this. As stated earlier, it is not a talent show...it's a TV show...which all boils down to ratings. Happy Holidays Friends, Cody S. Fisher

Hi Cody, I was thinking about you just north of me. You should do it man. They are right smack in your city.
Ive been on the phone talking to someone who was on it. If you are a singer, I would defintely think twice. But if you like to see how things work and all, well I first told them NO but had second thoughts about it. I love WWE also.

Having gone through the complete AGT experience about a year ago, my advice would be that unless you 90 seconds of something completely different or unusual, I'd tell you to skip it. Make an honest assessment of what you do and if it is unique enough to work the crowd and move forward against some truly amazing acts. It can be really tough to convey your talent in that short amount of time.
They had scouts in town here about a year ago. I was doing my act at a midnight cabaret and I was approached during intermission to see if I wanted to come down to the convention center for an interview. They said I could have an appointment and avoid the cattle call line. So I went. You get filmed doing your bit and then you wait about a month or so to hear if you're going to advance further in the competition. I got the call and they said they wanted to interview me too. Here's the thing - I'm not delusional about my act. It's a burlesque comedian magician act. The only reason they might possibly want it for TV is the same reason they let really lousy singers in front of the judges for that other talent show. It makes for compelling preview commercials and good TV when people get shot down trying out for talent shows. I thought it'd be fun to play that angle - think about - The Pizpor (Pizz-Poor) Show. Why would they possibly want that? It works at the Renaissance Festival, not Vegas. The whole production crew was here last winter and they took over a big theater downtown. I got the interview and actually got on stage in front of the judges. And that was it. Even if you make it past the judges, they immediately tell you backstage that that doesn't mean you'll go any further. I knew a couple of other magicians that went through it and none of them made it either. The judges have this been there, done that attitude about a LOT of the acts that pass across the stage. They filmed 4 sessions over two days - dozens of acts and maybe a handful you got to see on TV. Frankly, after the first experience, I was actually thankful I didn't have to come up with another 90 second bit. Oh, and that contract - yikes. They can do want ever they want with the video any time, anywhere in the universe (I'm not kidding about that) It was actually a lot of fun, so if you want to do it for the experience, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Just be honest with yourself. I wish you good luck. (oh, and I snuck a photo backstage by the AGT banner in the equipment room. It's up on my Facebook page. Contraband!) |

PizPor Were on stage with Celb judges?
How controling where they with what material you presented? You said you had fun. Do you feel others do not have the same experience since they went in with higher expectations and a false sense of the act they have and how far it can go? |
Pizpor Elite user 476 Posts |
Yes - I was on stage in front of the celebrity judges.
The celebrity judges issued no control what so ever over what they see on stage. They are there to see whatever the producers line up to come across the stage. In order to get on stage your act is prescreened in advance - they tape it, you wait a several weeks, and if they want you on stage, you submit a script and jump through some other hoops.. I had a great time and had no expectations of advancing anywhere in the competition. Yes - I suspect a good number of people really thought they had a great act only to have it brought down a notch or two by the judges. Just take a look at any of the talent shows and you'll see people that get a chance in front of judges, only to be rejected. That can be hard on some egos. Hope that helps. |

Well I meant did the producers say what had to do use from your act .

No. Why would they. If they don't like it, you don't go on. They don't dictate what you do.

Best attitude of anyone going on a life adventure such as this! Just being able to say they progressed anywhere in the AGT ladder is a big bonus IMO. Of course if anyone ask on film, you are going in to win! Hey Powermagic, where are you heading to audition?
