Lee, while I agree that people tend not to remember the details of exposed methods, they do remember that there IS a method. And, as shrink says, this is poison to mentalism. Just about nobody touches spoonbending on the TV these days, including Geller, because of this.
Unfortunately, people's memories are pretty good for this sort of information. For instance, although we can't remember the specific details of a series of photographs, we are very good at remembering whether we've seen a particular picture before, or not (tests have shown that we can do this accurately with upwards of 10,000 NEW pictures). So, although people soon forget the 'how' (which makes the proposed use of alternative methods redundant), they do seem to remember that there is a 'how'. This is great for the debunkers, who want to propagate their belief that the universe is entirely knowable - that there must always be a rational explanation for things - but not so good for other performers. I'll finish with this. I'm puzzled why magic has become so closely identified with this rather quaint 19th century version of rationalism. Science has moved on from its exclusive dependence on the clockwork/mechanistic model, to many other ways of seeing. Regards, Caleb Strange.

Could you please inform me as to why you're laying into Derren Brown in your first post. I didn't think he had anything to do with this appalling program. Oh, and the BBC are exposing more secrets this Saturday. Please enlighten me. Nick |

Nick,
That was over a year ago. I would say laying into is a strong description. As I remember and it was a while ago and this is like talking to the dead. At least this thread is dead. Derren was associated with the show by appearing on it. If I remember he talked about spoon bending and seance. This was also at a time when Derren had a lot of ambiguity and implied suggestion about being genuine himself. He no longer is in that space which is a shame.. Shrink |

Erm did anyone notice that the seance shown in the series was more or less exactly the same seance that was used to good effect by Derren in his finale Seance of his special. Kinda interesting and makes you think the whole crew should get some new material....and I'm a fan of Derrens
One day I will write a book
