It's ok to be a hobbyist in magic, in fact hobbyist have it the best in magic!!!!
They don't have to concern themselves with marketing, where the next shows are coming from, with getting paid, unusual working conditions and making a decent living. A hobbyist can concentrate on nothing but the magic it's self. If you think about it some of the best magicians were "amateurs" ~ John Ramsey, Simon Aaronson the list could go on and on ....

René Lavand always say in his show that the most beautiful word in magic is "amateur" or "amador" which means "lover" in english.

Vick, you made my day with this post, despite my only reading it today. I've been an amateur my entire time in my magical mystery tour and I started late in life with my hobby. But after years of collecting and owning some wonderful effects, I decided I wanted to actually perform them for people. Long story short, I'm now retired and enjoying my hobby but at the same time, I take any opportunity I can to perform, either for a nursing home, senior center, local library or pre schoolers. And you're right, I'm not in it for the money, but for the love of the hobby. And while my shows are few and far between, I've broken the ice and learn something everytime I perform at an event. I consider myself very fortunate.
And you're quite right. The "show" consists not only of the performance, but the travel, the set up time, take down time, coordination of space, parking, assistance, etc. etc. etc. Professional magicians work very very hard for their living and deserve each and ever dollar they earn.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |
