This is also the same set of coins but a different routine.

The premise is a very good one and it is one of my favorite effects to perform. The problem is that most of the sets out there come with a copper-plated Kennedy and gold-plated Kennedy (clad coins) that look horrible. By that I mean that the coloration of the plating is such that you often have to struggle to see what color they are, and you have you catch good lighting to see it well. The silver English penny always looks great. I took two clad Kennedy coins to a jeweler to have them plated in copper and gold, and they turned out much better that way - and it was not expensive at all.
Having said that, as I said before, the routine is a lot of fun. It gives a different play on the Wild Coin plot and there are lots of routining and storytelling possibilities with this on. It would not hurt to check it out and pick up a set. Who knows? You might luck out and get a set that looks very good. Another option is to visit your local Michael's craft stores and look for something called Liquid Leaf. They come in Copper, Gold, Venetian Gold, Silver and a bunch of variations on those. It contains a shellac of sorts so the coating is protected once it dries. You can carefully paint a thin layer onto a clad coin a let it dry, repeating if necessary. The overall finish is very smooth and does not really effect the handling of the coins if you are practiced in coin work, and they look very good. If you go this route, just make sure all the copper coins you are using look the same (read: have the same finish/coloration). |
