Hello wonderful mentalists!
I have a question of opinion for you all... I'm in the process of purchasing some books that I've wanted for a while now. I've met a roadblock when it came to deciding whether to purchase the 'PRISM' series by Max Maven, or 'Psychological Subtleties 3' by Banachek. I own PS1, so it could be nice to see some applications of concepts in PS3. However, I wish to compare the two objectively: Which book has a better collection of EFFECTS? Your thoughts are appreciated! Cheers, Cooper

Your question equates to ... Should I get pancakes or Waffles?
They're both good books. With out knowing you very well...no one can tell you which one would be better for you. |

What effects does your current act consist of? Who are you - what is your persona? If it is only effects that you after, you could probably buy better books, but if you are interested in studying the thinking behind these effects, then, you should buy both IMO.

Brehan, I agree tools are the MOST important.
I'm looking for a collection of effects to get my creative juices flowing, either to add to my repertoire or to branch an idea out into something original. I understand that the PRISM series has a very "bare bones" approach to methodology, which gives me the ability to routine uniquely... A book of effects is NOT a books of tricks to me, it's a toolbox with a different cover. Richard, I perform close up, and parlour size audiences. I don't like to get too proppy with my acts. I do add elements of the bizzarre, but on a more psychological sort of field. Idk if that helps, but that is my direction. Thanks!

Both are good purchases and belong in your library. Cooper, you asked about effects. PRISM is a book of effects. In my mind it's meat and PS3 is mostly good gravy that adds flavor to the dish. Buy PRISM this month and PS3 next month. It's too bad you don't have a friend or magic store nearby to let you look between the books' covers. Or maybe you have that available and don't realize it?

Thanks to Don Theo for backing me up; makes a fella' proud. Coop, I just read a cool description of a routine that appears early in PRISM, based on an earlier idea published in Swami by Arthur Emerson. It's very good and I've never seen anyone do it. Something I really like about Max Maven is his steel-trap memory for methods when others have forgotten them. He's the doctor of design, the engineer of effect, the maven of methodology. His index of effects is huge and his stuff is almost always practical. Have you seen his columns in Genii this past year?
Then there are books like Mind, Myth and Magick that seem impractical, especially in the early chapters, but have a way of stirring up creativity as you read. Of the writing of books and the creation of new effects there is no end. Enjoy your discoveries.

Mike,
Your words are truly inspired! It seems like your approach to mentalism is exactly what I aim for- emotion, and creativity. Thank you for your guidance, I'm going to start with the PRISM series. Cheers, Cooper

Aside from the distinction between PS3 and Prism - I prefer PS2 over PS3.

I would go for PS3 (but you also should get PS2 and PRISM later on).
But you should know, that PS2 and PS3 are a little bit different to PS1. In PS1 there are almost "only" tools, in the other two books of the series the fokus is shifted a little to more effects.
Sorry for my English! My German is a little bit better ;-)

Prism is a collection of some of the foundational works of modern (post 1970s) mentalism and, as such, you really should be familiar with it.
The Banachek series is an essential compilation of psychological techniques that can substantially enhance any performance. Picking one of these works over the other is impossible, as it is not an either/or proposition. Eventually you will want to have them both. My recommendation is that you start with Prism. If you want EFFECTS , as you said, Maven´s Prism will give you a lot of fun.
BUT I prefer to recommend you the PS series by Banachek. Having solid basis on subtleties about performance (quality) is far important in my opinion that growing up your repertoire (quantity).

Thank you all for your wonderful thoughts between these two!
As I own PS1 already, along with other Banachek material, I have decided to go with PRISM on this purchase. I understand that this is an essential piece to add to my library, I'm excited! Mr. Cassidy, Thanks for your definition of each of these works. I agree each are different in nature and difficult to compare. Also, may I add that your "39 steps" has instantly become my favorite list to reference when I'm purchasing, or simply remembering to go back to my roots. Truly a list of gems! To Mr Ince, and Amira: I assure you, the rest of the PS series is NEXT on my list....Of course, after I eat sleep and breathe the color series. Cheers, Cooper
