Hi everybody,
I know, one of the rules in mentalism is, never using the word "tricks". But if you say to someone," i´m doing tricks with the mind", would that work, or rather not? regards kiki |

Yes it can certainly work. Derren did it for two whole series, and that turned out rather well for him.
I call myself "Thomas Cooper" here because this stops the magic café appearing when people google my stage name.
Does anyone else find the term "Special User" to be a bit condescending? |

Kiki, do as you want.
At the end if your performance is powerful enough, it doenst matter how much disclaimers you use, they will believe.

Kiki -- "Tricks" is a negative buzzword in this forum as there is a delicate sensitivity on the part of some regarding the relationship between mentalism and magic. But I feel this is largely a semantic. For many ordinary people, when something mystical happens that they cannot explain, it is, to them, a "trick." This does not mean that, in their mind, they equate it with the ball and vase in their kid's magic set. Like Amira says, you can tell people that there is nothing psychic about what you are doing, and then at the end of your performance, people will still walk up and ask about your abilities, if your performance is powerful.

Theinternetguru has hit the nail flat on the head. Which is why I like using the word "trick", because it just buggers people up here so much so.

Say what you like. At the end of the day there are no set "rules" that every mentalist should follow. There are some things most agree on what we would call "Good Mentaslism" and "Bad Mentalism" but even they are up for debate.
If you want to say "tricks of the mind" or "mind tricks" or even "mental magic" I don't see any problem in it just as long as your peformances are entertaining. I think there are too many people getting up on their high horse on what we call ourselves, if we should use disclaimers, if we should say we have genuine abilities, if we should wear certain clothes or perform certain effects. Do what you want! As long as you're happy and your audeince is happy who cares what another mentalist thinks? I know I perform and say certain things that others would never ever ever peform or say, but they fit my style and they work for me so whats the problem? Say what you like my friend. :) M.U |
