John Carney's DVD set The Master Sessions has everything that you'll need to learn the Versa Switch, and much, much more.

It's taught very well on the Masters Sessions DVDs.

I have a question about the Versa Switch....
I am learning from multiple resources (The main source itself ofcourse, Carneycopia, but also the Scams & Fantasies book by Darwin Ortiz where he uses it in two routines I would like to perform, namely the Hitchcock Travelers and Cannibal Holocaust) and I think I understand the switch well. It seems like it is quite an illusion but I have a small problem.. well two.. These two problems refrain me from doing the sleight, namely: a) Angles. How angle sensitive is this? Since it looks a bit like the Curry Turnover (with its strange grip) but then done with a packet, I don't think you get much leeway doing the sleight in front of an audience around you (while it says in Carneycopia that the sleight is invisible from all angles)? Maybe it is good for 2,3 spectators in front of you, or is this not true? I tried to film it but when I try to perform it, it looks terrible and I'm flashing horrible (you can see me dipping the packet.. any advice on this?). b) Bumping into the other cards while trying to scoop them. Another problem I frequently get is accidently bumping into the other cards while trying to scoop the packet to be switched underneath the tabled packet. This is ofcourse a "worst-case-scenario". Is there any correct technique or can some of the pro's here give me some advice on how to avoid this. I figured (and this is noted in the books), coming at it "from a angle) but this doesn't work all the time for me, unfortunately. Is there any knack to this? Any advice on how to avoid this problem? Thanks in advance. I recognise a good sleight when I see it and this seems one of those great switches. Now I'll read some more to see if I perhaps overlooked some key insights. Kind regards and thanks in advance. |

Done the right way, you don't really need to worry about angles. This will be one of the few times I recommend watching a DVD -- but since you mentioned Scams and Fantasies -- on the DVD Darwin gives a little bit more advice about the switch than he does in the book, which helps with the questions you asked.

Thanks for the tip (i only have the book though, I never really invested in DVD's )!!
If you like, I can make a private video of me performing the sleight. Maybe the people who have mastered the move can give me some advice on what I could and should improve? |

On top of being a great trick, here's Michael Vincent performing the sleight starting around 3:03

Great effect and great example of the switch. And that laugh from the spectator is the best. I need that guy in all my performances.

I think MV usually gets a pretty good reaction, to be fair.

MV's handling is ingenious. It's a great alternative to the original that can't be done when the surface you work on is too slippery.

As far as I know, the Broken Versa Switch is by Andrew Wimhurst. It was on his video tape.

And Michael Vincent gives credit to both Carney and Wimhurst.

Darwin Ortiz does it on the 'Nothing but the Best' video series, I believe in one of the routines referenced above, but it's a bit cursory. I'd go with Carney's advice and not rely on a DVD.
