Ok, how many of you have worn a diaper on your head during your kids show?
Would you be surprised to learn that David Kaye never wore a diaper on his head and only put it in his book as a joke to show how magicians can't think for themselves and just do what everyone else comes up with without any thought about how it related to their character or how they actaully look on stage? Personally, I would be surprised and I highly doubt it is true (because I just made all this up) but it made me laugh at the thought. You gotta admit... that would be hella funny, woudln't it? If.... the joke's on us?!? Come on... Raise your hand !!!!

Most kids hate diapers, well no, ALL kids hate diapers. So why would I wear one?
But hey, if I ever hear a kid say, 'I love my diaper' I might consider it. LOL Tom

Either raise your hand or I will be forced to go look back at the diaper threads to see who you are and expose you!!!!!

Hehe ok, I am definitely out of the loop.
I have never heard of anyone wearing a diaper on their head or elsewhere for a gag and I even had to look up David Kaye to see who he was! (I've heard of Silly Billy, didn't know his real name) So my hand gets to stay down. |

The Great Zucchini uses it often in his preschool show to great effect. Works for him, but I suspect not for most of us. I don't (and won't) do it because it doesn't fit my character. But if it fits yours, go for it.
Eric (The GZ) uses it because it generates great reaction from the kids. |

It works for GZ, and he definately thinks for himself.(I think that was the point of the thread)
I've read his notes and seen his lecture. He does what works for him and the children and he is probably as far from any other magician as I can imagine. He doesn't care what the adults may think, if the kids love it then it goes in the show. That is the point of the show. After the show, he does what the adults want him to. Chat and charm etc. His act has developed from his own experiences and thoughts. That is what we should all do. If the breakaway wand only gets a lukewarm reaction (even though Silly Billy gets huge laughs doing 'exactly' the same thing) then don't give up, but try a different spin it. Talk to it, create a sticker reward chart for it, I don't know. Back to the point, we all have access to the same props, make them 'yours'. Even if it is a dirty nappy. |

Why wear a diaper on your head when you can humiliate a Child by putting it on his/her head (on their Birthday)? Talk about making the party memorable. The kid may pick up a nickname to last a lifetime.
For the record, I'm kidding and hope no "Magician" does this. -Mary Mowder |

I have never...as close as I get is producing a giant (size 100) pair of "tighty whiteys" men's underwear from a square circle, after asking the audience, "...what's under THERE?"...they of course reply, "Under Where?". Printed in large iron-on letters on the REAR of the underwear are the words "THE END"
No diaper, however. Steve |

That's funny Steve. I also produce the giant underwear from a square circle. Your "under where" gag is funny. I have one of the kids put on the underwear - it's funny and makes a good photo op. I'm still trying to work out a better routine with it though.

Well I never put a diaper on my head but have done lots of other bizzare funny things to get the kids to laugh. I love physical comedy and have lots of that in the show.
I too produce the worlds largest undies but I pull them out from my pants. quite funny. I use it in my "favorite Book" routine and always goes over well. the key with kids is to let it all go and stop worrying about impressing any one. just have some fun. sam

I haven't done it. My puppets have made reference to diapers. Nigel talks about his little baby sister. Baby Harriet comes out later and sings the baby blues. First she does it in "Baby talk", then I interpret. During the bit, I play back up on my harp/harmonica.
First we imitate, then emulate. Then we create and others imitate us. Then and then.....they hopefully learn to create. Most of the characters I play in my programs come from a part of my personality. Either as I am now, or have been growing up. It is a lot easier to write about my own experiences and those that are common to us all. (Everyman) Harris

A diaper is one of the many silly objects the monkey-puppet pulls from the square circle in search of a wand, and when I say "You know what this is right?" He whispers to me and I say "A HAT!??! Whaddya mean...it's not a--" at this momment the monkey slaps it on top of my head.
Gets HUUUUGE reactions and laughter from the kids. Regarding Mary's post, I'd NEVER put it on a child-volunter's head! Not only could that scar the child, it will cut down on the number of audience mambers willing to volunteer. In fact, I'd hesitate even dressing the kid up in a silly way (which I know a lot of kid-performers do) or doing the hat-plunger-gag, or Bongo hat despite it's popularity. Yes, I'm sure theyre funny, but anything that gets laughs from many kids at the expense of one kid runs the risk of the one kid crying...a stone-cold show-KILLER. The breakaway-wand is different: I'm the one acting all surprised & distressed, so the laughter is aimed at ME, not the kid holding the wand.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

Very nice post Mr. Fool.
The monkey bit is very funny. The "cut down on the ..." bit shows you've done a few shows in your time.
