I have just finished reading my copy of Rawlin`s new book `Roulette` and find myself agreeing with the words of Luke Jermey`s foreward; ".... there will be moments that you will want to adapt to fit your own style". With the possible exception of "Kicker Chirp Top" I cannot see myself adopting any of the material in my act, although in fairness whilst I do often use mentalism as a ploy I am not an outright Mentalist, that said the book is a great exploration of Rawlin`s methodology and how he likes to construct his routines, and in every effect there was something that caught my attention and upon reflection did challenge the way I construct routines. To this end, as Jermey had hinted, there were moments in every effect that I wanted to explore further.
Fans of Mind Experiments (Rawlin`s first publication) will be pleased to see further thought given to "bold moves" and the casual reader will be impressed by the simplicity of these moves and the author`s faith in their employment, calling for the reader to have the confidence of trying them. In places the text feels argumentative, especially Rawlin`s essay about the `Lazy Mentalist`, I am sure everyone that reads the book will be sympathetic with his notes and find themselves in complete agreement but I did feel this essay felt out of place within the book. That said it was well written and true. To those that know Chris they will know he has been a good student of mentalism, and this book stands testament to that with plenty of references to previous mentalists and magicians and I was extremely pleased to see credits given at the end of each effect. Finally whilst I started this review by stating that I would not incorporate many of the effects for myself, they are all extremely well explained, very workable and I can see many mentalists, and/or magicians alike, wanting to adopt some of these effects - they would be able to do that very quickly with great success and therefore I would recommend this text. It is a well written book with some impressive effects, and for me some interesting observations about audience management and magical presentation. |

Hi Guys, Quick message from Chris
'In reply to Luca's issue, although this was cleared with Luca himself a long time ago, as he states above. I wish to make everything clear for everyone else. I made it clear to Luca that the envelope force in both our routines goes way back, to Koran and even earlier. Whilst people like Andy Nyman making use of it in his wonderful book 'Bulletproof'. With regards to the clipboard peek, Luca originally had an issue because my method uses a certain type of board, as does his. I reminded Luca that Luke Jermay published something very similar to Luca's idea with a board over ten years ago, in his book 'The Coral Fang'- (this features in the blindfold routine at the conclusion of the book). Luca, as of a while ago wished me great success with Roulette and all future ventures, and I am happy to have cleared things up with him as soon as his issues arrived. I also feel it is fair to keep everyone who is interested in the know too. If you want to see me at Blackpool 2013, come over to the Vanishing Inc stand, we have something very special that I am very proud of and excited about. It's not being released for Blackpool but we are bringing a bunch. I'm always grateful when people read, study and use my work and thoughts. Thanks, Chris Rawlins. chrisrawlinsmentalist@gmail.com (for contact as I'm not a member on here) |

Just read this. For the record I don't know Chris and I purchased my copy from Vanishing Inc. I am very impressed with this material. For the price and more important the quality of the effects I am suprised there is not more buzz about it. The thinking is outside the box and with work on your presentation this is the type of material that can leave a lasting impression on your spectators. Highly recommend this book
