2 days ago I was looking my Poker protection book like a jeweler look a Diamond, thinking about all the secrets enclosed in....
And something suddenly jump to my eyes.... Look at the 3 marked cards that are on the cover: (a link for thoses who don't have the book) https://www.bobkohlermagic.com/photos/36......ular.jpg The 3 cards are different, ok? Because of the marks in the circle on the belly angel. But if you take a closer look all around this circle, you will remark that ALL the pattern of the third card is different! First and second are the same, but the third is totally different! I don't own this type of card, so I can't compare them. Is it possible that the third card came frome a different deck? Or maybe it was a training card for marking. (but there is so many difference, I doubt) I know there is some Steve's friends on this forum, so maybe they can answer... |

I'd posit that they were from a marked deck.......for your viewing pleasure.

I can't see so much difference between the first and the second, but the third is totally different.

All three cards are different.........look closely at the hash marks on the angel/mermaids belly.
But don't psych yourself out........you don't have to look that close. |

Except the hash mark on the angel/mermaids belly, what are the difference between the first and the second card?

I don't know.......for the purposes of marked cards you don't really need anything else

So, why there is about 20 other marks on the third card?

What do you think these "20 other marks" indicate, exactly? The suit, the value, whether it's low or high, whether it's odd or even, if it's divisible by 3, the weather when the cards were marked, what time it was, what was playing on the tv, etc, etc?
I'd think they were from a separate deck with a slightly different back design, but maybe I'm just too much of a square to figure out the use of 2 dozen different marks on one card. |

Hihi, I understand that the "20 other marks" are not mark in the common sens, and yes the card came probably from another deck. ( sorry but I don't speak english very well, so sometimes I don't have the words to tell exacly what I want to say, excuse me )
But why Steve has take the third card from another deck to expose the same mark? (hash on belly mermaid) What is the goal for a big card company to create a "slighty different back design", is there other type of slight different back design? (from other brand) Maybe it was a second edition of the back design or a couterfeiting. I think it's an interesting detail for card collector. |

Jackouille07,
Those cards are Angel Back Squeezers and yes, there are minor differences in the cards depending on when they were made. Cards 1 and 2 came from one version and the third card came from a different version. Whether or not these cards were together in one deck in Steve's marked cards collection is anybody's guess. When that photo was taken, the cards were being used to illustrate the line work on the angel's bellies only. The fact that two different types of Angel Back Squeezers happened to be used in one photo is merely a coincidence. Jason

Maybe the deck happened to be made up of sorts? Whether intentional or not, the pic does show how a "marked deck" can be made up of factory produced cards with no additional work added.

Thank you Jason, you've answered my interrogations.

The vast majority of Steve's marked cards came from Hunt and Co. and were all purchased together (about 3,000 decks). Who knows why those particular cards were mixed like that? It could have been done accidentally or purposefully by Steve 5 minutes before the picture was taken or 50 years before the picture was taken by somebody at Hunt and Co. It's impossible to know when, how or why that happened.

..........couldn't help but notice the number "3000" Jason!
And from Hunt and Co. to boot. Did they all go in the auction?.......I don't recall seeing that many individual decks in the auction catalog. |

Silverking,
The decks were sorted into lots and sold by Steve long before his auction. I believe it was sometime in 2004 (if memory serves). Large lots contained ~ 40 different decks, smaller lots contained ~ 25 decks. You can think of them as instant marked cards collections. I think he sold around 20 - 30 of each sized lot to friends. The remainder, which contained a lot of duplication, was sold to a private collector. Steve kept about 500 decks that were all different that was, as far as he knew, the largest marked cards collection in the world. That too was sold privately after his auction. Jason
