Folks,
Open Heart Magic will be providing entertaining therapy and bedside magic to sick kids up to twice a week at up to eight hospitals in the Greater Chicago area. We're rolling out a new program to work with kids in specialized situations at certain pilot hospitals across Greater Chicago to get this new program started in addition to our Bedside Magic program of 40 plus magicians. We expect this first Magic University class to contain 8-14 individuals. We're currently developing the magic and interactions and we're very satisfied with the close-up magic and the interactions. They're very strong. We are looking for 1-2 additional Magic University candidates for the volunteer Hospital Magician position for each of the following hospital partnerships/areas: 1) Advocate Christ Hope Children's Hospital, Oak Lawn http://www.volunteermatch.org/search/opp987069.jsp 2) Advocate Lutheran General Children's Hospital, Park Ridge http://www.volunteermatch.org/search/opp987051.jsp 3) The new program at University of Chicago, Comer Children's Hospital http://www.volunteermatch.org/search/opp987061.jsp ***For full information on the positions, work, joy of serving and commitment (as well as information on how to apply) please cut and paste the above links for full information on volunteermatch. We look for fun, interesting individuals with the commitment and follow through to go through 11 weeks of training/certification (one evening per week) and be scheduled on an Open Heart Magic partner hospital magician team to visit the kids at their bedsides every other week. Since we have teams scheduled, there is flexibility in swapping schedules with other hospital magicians for vacations, etc. Magic U starts in March. Magic experience is not required. Magic know how helps but we look for performance and volunteer experience and fun/outgoing characters to be able to engage the kids. Approx. 80% of our 40 Hospital Magician volunteers have had no previous magic experience and they're now confidently performing strong close up magic and sleight of hand for young children, teens, their families as well as adults at Open Heart Magic events. We will teach you everything from the close up magic with scripts, sleight of hand, to all aspects of close-up magic performance. The magic is very strong. We then cover adaptation so you're able to work with kids who can't more their arms or have other physical restrictions. At the end of training, you will be confident in dealing with all the different aspects of working in a hospital including performing wearing gloves and a mask. The Magic U education also includes evaluations due to the need to have specific protocol in a hospital. Open Heart Magic is very appreciative to the magic community for all of the support for the cause as well as help in getting the word out. Existing magicians have gone on to become trainers of the new classes in Magic U. Because of such, please note that you've heard about this listing through themagiccafe on your application for special consideration. Do know that positions do fill up quickly and we only have so many spots at our upcoming Magic U. Magic University will take place at the Open Heart Magic office downtown across from Sears/Willis Tower a couple blocks away from the train station. Important side note, Open Heart Magic does not do clowning. We focus on interactive close-up magic, bedside magic instruction and the use of magic as therapy. We've sort of gained a fun anti-clown culture as part of the punchiness of the magicians who are involved with the organization. If you're a clown, then please be aware. If you have any questions, then please shoot me a message. Check out http://www.openheartmagic.org for more details on the organization. Thanks as always to those part of the Magic Café who have helped with volunteering, coming up with routines and scripts, and providing supplies and discounts. True thanks. Mike |
