After much research and a lot of debate, I have finally decided on getting one of these two combo cups. I would like to hear everyone's opinions on these two styles of cups. The advantages versus the disadvantages (in your opinion / for you), what you like versus what you don't like and anything else you feel is pertinent to these two styles of cups.

This is a lot like asking, "Do you prefer Swiss or Muenster cheese?", but I'll throw in my 2 cents. I have never held or worked with the Foxy cups, but I have the Mendoza cups, and they will probably be my cups for life. They are well balanced, fit my hand well, do that roll-over move nicely, and hold a load bigger than I will ever need. (Just for information, my prior cups were Charlie Miller's from Magic, Inc.) The Mendozas have a lot of attic space, which is a feature I was looking for. Three 1 1/8" balls will fit nicely between 2 cups. You will need to use at least 1 1/8" balls to use the combo feature, however.
The cups are solid and well made, with a good weight to them. I am very happy. Mark |

I had both, and kept the Foxy cups, I like the shape better, but at the end is your choice.
I did remember reading that the Mendoza's were better for the Mendoza routine, at least the original that John had ( not RNT2) Anyway pick the one you like better both are nice |

I too have the Mendoza set and have found them to be a lot of fun to work with. Great features, they handle beautifully and I would buy them again in a heartbeat. I find them to be a good, solid cup with just the right amount of weight; not too heavy, but not too light. The gaff works perfectly and they're all around a fantastic set for a number of different routines.

Andrew,
On the Mendoza set, does the gimmick make the cup significantly heavier? Is the gaff well hidden so it looks the same as the non-gimmicked cups? Thanks. -Paul

The gaffed and ungaffed cups are identical in size, weight and design except for the gaff. Weight and balance are the same among all three. This also means you can lose track of the gaffed cup very easily if you're not careful.

I'll second what Dave says. The gaff is undetectable on my set, both in weight and appearance. You feel like Donnie has screwed up your order and sent you a straight set of cups until you start working with them. The patina on my cups lets me know with a quick visual inspection which cup is which, but I've done my routine so many times I never lose it anyway. It's helpful when working out new sequences but the patina was really just a happy accident. No spectator will be able to spot it.

Inasmuch as these two sets are SO similar - you might make your choice based on which exterior profile creates the best illusion that the final loads could not have come from inside the cups After all, it is largely the final load's impact that is the reason we do this trick

Go with the Foxy 3 combos, the design is so aesthetic and the final loads don't look like they could fit back in the cup.

I think the "Mendoza design" with the two rings grouped at the midpoint is more pleasing to the eye and, for some reason, looks less gimmicky.
Towards the end of RNT II I purchased a set of copper Mendoza Cups from Jake and mine (all 3) seem a little top heavy. Is this just the nature of this particular beast? Julie |

Gary, if I can help in any way, just PM me.
Julie, we make them top heavy on purpose. If you drop one, it lands saddle side down. If you hold one mouth down, it will want to naturally pivot mouth up. If you want to tip one over from mouth down position, it will naturally roll over. And Gary, I always offer a 30 day return policy if you change your mind. |
