Sorry; this has probably been covered before, but I couldn't find it...
The trick where you show cigarette ash has appeared in the spectator's palm...what different presentations are there? Thank you! |

Eugene Burger has a presentation for it. I've read about Heba Heba Al's bar presentation, which is pretty sweet. I'm not sure which books they're in.

It is getting harder and harder to find an ashtray lying around INSIDE with cigarette ashes in it!- Maybe this is limited now to performances outside a bar or restaurant. Maybe that's where all the cigarette manipulation acts have gone.

How about if you modified it to include drawing an outline of a hand on a paper napkin, burning a hole in the center of it, giving you all the ash you need to complete the act and show mark on their hand in a sort of "voodoo" style routine.
I got the idea by watching someone do the "blister" routine that way. I think it would have more impact if you showed the mark was on *their* hand instead.

You could use black lipstick instead of ashes, if you have a pocket to keep it in, separate from other things.

It doesn't have to be black either, but anyone who watches mindf•••• may remember that he exposed the method on his show.

Of course there are also different methods than what Chris exposed on that show (which I did not see and do not watch) for this effect. One just has to think outside of the box.

As long as the net result is the same the spectator doesn't care that the method he's been shown is wrong. You need to get pretty far away from the stock presentation before they forget what they saw before and think they're seeing something new.

I used to do a variation of Burger's presentation -- which DOES NOT INVOLVE CIGARETTES OR ASHES AT ALL!!!!!
I did this onstage with a volunteer from the audience. Even did the cleanup right before their eyes. Great idea from the other bearded guy.

Let me add this. I think the Burger routine was in a set of lecture notes. I learned it from him at a TAOM convention in San Antonio in 1994. I used it at the Renaissance Festival every year after that. The best part of the routine is that there are no cigarettes involved. Everything is motivated, too, including the cleanup.
It's presented as a voodoo routine.
