This book is obviously aimed more at the mass market than us the niche. This is what's scary and wrong about this book.

I know noone who would buy this book of my non magic friends. They wouldn't know what it was about and if they did read it they would say it's about magic.

I see that this is his 3rd book on Mentalism. Since the other two have slid by us without notice, I think I now predict this will be a non-event.
I hope so, anyway.

I just checked this book out from my local library, which I suppose is good and bad: bad, because there is more exposure for the layman here than I've ever seen before; and good because I didn't add any pieces of silver to James Clark's wallet.
The most offensive thing about this book is its blatant intent to undermine the magic code. Not only does it include chapters on p**ks, bil***s, b**k t**ts, swamis and more, but there are a ton of effects here that have appeared in the works of Corinda, Annemann, Gardner, etc. with nearly zero attribution. While that would be bad enough, the way Clark acknowledges his forebearers--basically, a two-page laundry list of names--is atrocious, intentionally leaving a target audience of laymen to distinguish the greats from those Clark has grudges against: "A small group directly contributed to the content in this book, whereas others will have done so indirectly or merely tangentially," he writes. "I've even included a few names as a source of wry amusement...I'll let you try to figure out who's who though." What? We have to determine whether "Theo Annemman" or "Basil Horwifz" came up with whatever effect you've misappropriated? FWIW, those misspellings are no mistake on my part; the laundry list also recognizes "Sigried & Roy," and includes both "Daniel Garcia" and "Danny Garcia." (Either publisher Wiley needs to fire its proofreader or she just didn't give a ****.) This seemingly minor lack of attention is only the first hint of the disrespect Clark gives to the industry and "the giants in our art," whom he has the audacity to suggest are given "credit where credit is due." Actually, giving proper credit would have been a good start. |

I have seen that my city's library has copies in their system, although I've never bothered to track one down. Given that the book was taken out of print in response to actions taken by members here, I'm tempted to take out all three copies owned by the libraries and "lose" them. The lack of respect and deliberate provocation described above was present throughout the publishing and promotion process, and so whilst I have never met or conversed with Mr Clark, I have no respect for him. What I have heard of the book confirms that he rips of effect after effect without credit, then intentionally thumbs his nose at the creators as if to say "Come at me, bro!" Well, they came at him, won Wiley over, and I haven't heard a peep from him since.
It is my hope that this thread will now die and be buried in the archives again.

Lay people don't care about this stuff. They only want to be entertained. The TT still entertains people. The salt shaker thru table still does, the people don't care. John |

It's not worth anything second hand, regardless of what prices are shown on eBay. It is utter rubbish! I tried to read a copy and found it excruciatingly boring and very light on useful content.
I'm sceptical about some eBay prices that I've seen for other mentalism books, by the way. I've seen the same seller putting up a certain Derren Brown book time and time again. He doesn't get the price he wants and so presumably 'buys' it himself and re-auctions. I have stopped monitoring it now, but it went on for weeks, if not months last year. My advice would be, pay what you believe a book is worth - but don't trust eBay prices as the sole source of that value. T. |

Yes, those Derren books are still there - I got a reminder email about them just last week, because they're somewhere on my watchlist. Never sold.
I have also heard a number of people say what you have about the quality of the book, Simon. I don't know how much of it is true, but I heard that some parts read as though the plagiarised works had been fed through an auto-thesaurus and come out nigh-unintelligible.
