Are there any firebreathers or club swingers out here?
I have two questions that have been bothering me a lot. I've been wanting to start fire breathing for a few months now but I'm concerned with safety precautions involved (and with good reason). I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to start. I bought a book on fire eating, "Fire Eating: A Manual of Instruction by Benjamin Garth" and all I've practiced have been blasts with water and that's about it. I was also curious whether you can eat a flame directly after a blast or if you need to backwash some water or something. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Now Swinging. How does anyone get started on this? I bought another book on it and it hasn't helped me much. Is it worth buying new clubs to figure it out? I haven't had much success with my Todd Smiths and I may get swinging clubs if I don't see progress. |

Firebreathing: Steven's Magic sells a "Magic of the Sideshow" video with Todd Robbins. He teaches fire eating and does some fire breathing on the tape as well. If I recall correctly he wipes his tongue with a rag after he breathes the fire and then eats fire again. DON'T TRY IT based on my vauge recollection of a tape I saw a while back. Buy the tape AND try to talk to Todd or some other fire guy (in person if you can) to learn the subtleties first!
Fire Swinging: I don't know much about it and have always kind of dismissed the idea of it but I recently saw a juggler in a comdey club do it and it looked great and people went nuts for it. It's not "me" but if you think it's "you" then it seems like it would be worth the trouble and expense to learn. BTW, this guy did it to music with the lights off. It killed! |

Joculari,
If you are seriously interested in fire eating/breathing Brian Brushwood has just released a new book which covers all of that information and more in great detail. Information from the website: The Professional's Guide to Fire Eating 172 pages - 208 illustrations - 24 effects - 8 spin flourishes - PLUS sections on material safety, torch construction, health risks, tips for the working professional, the history of fire eating, and more! I bought it a few weeks ago and it is an excellent resource. You can order it at: http://www.youcaneatfire.com Good luck and BE CAREFUL! David

Joculari,
Glad to hear you could use the info. The book is really a great resource. It also straightens out some rather dangerous and inaccurate information that is in some older fire eating books. Good luck and BE CAREFUL!!

WOw. I tried it this weekend...........
It's so much fun! And on top that , I'm still alive! I'll try and post picks. I never had an idea about how big a blast can come from such a small amount of naptha. Has anyone tried colored flames? Perhaps mixing different metals into the naptha? |

Um, did you actually read anything about blasts? Naptha??? Please do yourself a favor and read the Brushwood book. Or talk with anyone who does fire spits...
This is why you should always learn stunts from someone who knows how, and not from a book like I did. |

What kind of fuel do you use? Naptha has been working fairly well for the last few weeks.

Ya, I used to use naptha when I learned. It worked well until I burned my nose and cheek very badly. The fact that this isn't pointed out properly has always been my major problem with the "manual of instruction" book.
We're not supposed to discuss specific how to methods here (I don't think anyway), but suffice to say that there is a much safer chemical to use. It's not only safer in terms of the fire produced but also in how easily it will go directly into your bloodstream and then to the liver. |
