I saw on Johnson's site a Walking Liberty expanded [. Has anyone bought this and , if so, how was the quality?

The quality is good. You just have to find coins that will fit well. I liked mine and for the price you cant go wrong.

I have one here also. I have been very fortunate in that most WL's I have tried fit well in this shell. Naturally though the shell came to me very shiny; had to use a bleach solution to darken it appropriately.

It came in today - very fast. It fits all my coins fine but it is shiny as J-Mac and mago.nago said. I am happy with it. J-Mac, what is the bleach solution? Water and bleach?

The instructions posted by mago are good. I used an almost exact set of instructions posted here on the Café back before that site was live. I believe I used a 5% bleach to water solution and left the shell in it for about five to 10 minutes. I also purchased a couple of the 7-way nail buffers and they are perfect for this. I didn't want the shell real dark; just enough to match most of the Walkers I own.

Jim I used about 50% bleach to water and the shell turned dark in about 20 seconds. In the begining it was a little bit darker than the other coins but after a short period of time (about a month) they had the exact same colour.

I was trying to get just a slight patina to match my coins, so I decided to go about it slowly. Worked out OK for me - the shell matches my W/L coins perfectly. Blackened coins - like the ones in the Café link in my last post - look fantastic, but I don’t have quite enough Walkers to experiment with them! And they got a little too high for me to get any more over the last two years. Getting more reasonable now so hopefully I will pick up some more soon!
Thanks! Jim |

I don't have a Johnson Walking Liberty; but I do have a Johnson Peace dollar [ . I have no complaints. Works very well, doesn't 'talk' a lot and looks great.
Of course, it isn't on-par with my Swadling or Schoolcraft [s; but then again, what is?!! And for the price, you can't beat it. |

I had a Johnson Morgan expanded shell I used for twenty years. I was using it in a walk around situation and it came apart in a spectators hand! The coin was a wafer thin head that fits inside a silver ring with milling in the edge. The top of the ring had a small ledge that held the wafer in place. It was two pieces that fit together by close tolerances. Eventually it will work loose and you too could have some scrap silver and a very surprised spectator.

Ouch! That is terrible, Bob. Although to be perfectly honest if I get 20 years from any gaffed coin I own I'll be happy!
Thanks! Jim |

I have sent my own coins to Johnson to make expanded shells. They have always done a great job .
