I know a few people sell the solid kicker cup, but I have not seen one made in a chop cup shape.
Is there anything like that being sold somewhere in the chop cup shape? Thanks! Roy |

Hi Roy,
You can get them custom-made by either Eric Hansen (user name here is Papasmurf), http://s290.photobucket.com/albums/ll267/sleightofH/ or Gareth, http://www.hiddenwrenmagic.com/ Francis

I understood exactly what he meant, and apparently so did francisngkl. It may not be apparent to the audience, but to us there is a "typical look" that we easily recognize as "Chop Cup" which *usually* means straight sides, and a rolled base cap to hide the "work." Details will vary, of course, but pretty much anyone who sees a cup such as this in the hands of a magician will know what they're looking at.

Bill, English is my second language, they say a good understanding needs half a word.
Let us not get too technical here, I have seen a lot of topics change into language discusions here on the forum. Just remeber there is a lot of non English speaking people from around the world that uses this forum too. I am sure you guys knew what I meant. Thanks for the help! Roy. |

I'm open to the reason/s of using the solid cup, but for me, I don't see the need for it since presenting it is obvious. What am I missing?

Maybe I'm dense, but what is obvious about it? The routine should imply that it's a normal cup that things pass in and out of, but the "kicker" is that it's impossible. This can be accomplished either with a switch, or handling the solid cup as if it was normal.
Please clarify what you mean by "presenting it is obvious"? Maybe Roy can help by explaining his intended use for such a cup?

Viking used to sell a chop cup and matching kicker cup seperately. The routine was very well written and the kicker cup was a great "suprise".

Sorry for the confusion. What I meant to say is wouldn't the spectator realize that a switch occurred with the cup? The funny thing is I have used a solid for the Okito box. Maybe it is the size that is tripping me up.
Anyway, thanks for asking and never mind my incapability of "getting it". |

If you grew up in South Africa, that excuse doesn't really hold a lot of water. Regarding the number of "non-English speaking people" who use this forum, I would imagine that would include a lot of Americans. There are a lot of people on this forum for whom English is a second language. Still, they manage quite well. If English is your second language, perhaps it would behoove you to pay a bit closer attention. If you intend to perform in English, as your web site implies, you probably don't want to make any embarrassing mistakes.

Bill, it was a simple question, I asked about a "chop cup shape". I do not understand what is so wrong about the language use here...? Most, including you knew what I was talking about. I was just looking for a simple awnser.
I think I mannage quite well in English too, even though it is my second language... But I will refrase my question: I am talking about the standard chop cup shape, similar to the Don Allen design, or cocktail shacker type of desgin. Something that does not have the rims on the side like the Paul Fox, or Mendoza type cups that are generaly uses for stacking the cups onto one another. Something a little bit more natural and inocent looking... I hope that made sense? Bill, with your knowledge about cups, are there anything like that available, or does it have to be custom made? Fraqncisngkl: Thank you for the link of the Gareth cup, it looks very nice however I would like to to find something in metal. rklew64: You can use the "solid kicker cup" without doing a switch, so in my opinion it would not be obvious to the audience that a switch occured. |

Swann,
if you are looking for a solid metal cup it will likely have to be custom made. RNT II may be up to the task for this, but you would have to speak with Donnie about it. RNT II already offers solid kicker cups for the Mendoza, Foxy III etc. The rim on it is pertinant to making the cup so finding a cup without a bead may be a bit tricky or require custom work.

Swann,
You'll also have to deal with a really heavy cup if it's truly "solid" Since Jake mentioned needing the rim, I'm guessing his "solid" cups are standard cups with a cover rolled over the mouth rim to keep it in place. The end result looks the same, but it saves a lot of weight. Another option is to research some of the routines using things that can be perceived as open or closed without drawing undue attention to it. "Beenie Weenie" a.k.a. "UnCanny" (Paul Harris/Michael Ammar) uses a small food can (lunch size beans and franks if I recall) with a pull ring lid. You never show the unopened can as empty, but through handling it appears as if items pass in and out of it until you display that the can was never opened in the first place. I like this more than most other "solid kicker" endings.

FRom a practical standpoint unless I was doing bar magic I would not want to haul another cup around just for a closer.

Thanks everyone for the advise!
Dave: I am currently using a sealed can (Harris/Ammar) type of routine, but want to go in a different direction. tboehnlein: This is for a bar routine. I have an extra shelf just below the work counter, so I could quite easily do a switch without much suspision. Pete: Thanks, I think I will try and fill a cup with resin as a test and see how it goes. |
