Here, you can buy this product and use this method.
http://www.magic.org/store/product_info.php?products_id=6496 I only know the very old method and that uses poison chemicals that may not be available today. The reason your chemicals took so long, was that they were old. The older the chemical, the less likely it will work as expected. |

Check out Jay Matiollis website for the chemicals you need.

That is a good source for the chemicals, but is does not say if it includes directions on the handling of them. If you are not sure, I would email and ask if information is supplied, as he may only sell extra supplies to those that have purchased his complete outfit. Just a suggestion on making sure you will be covered with correct handling.

Having performed the Sands for over 30 years now, I have always felt that the color change of the water is unnecessary and just shouts "CHEMICALS!" to the audience. When they start to suspect the water, then they suspect the sand - or that the chemicals in the water somehow keep it dry. Don't run if you're not being chased. I've always used a brass bowl (as did Laurant, Fu Manchu, Gwynne and others - before Doug Henning did the color changing water on his first TV special in 1975) and the opaque bowl plays just fine. It's a classic effect in its' original form.
BTW, one of the chemicals used used to be car radiator cleaner. Very toxic. The other chemical involved also has a tendency to stain your hands - and who knows what else with repeated exposure. (Yes, I tried the chemicals years ago, but decided it did not add to the effect.) Stay safe! |

Jonathan Pendragon performs a lovely version of Sands of Egypt which uses a translucent, almost transparent, bowl....and clear water (no color change).
It can be found on Vol. 3 of The Magic of the Pendragons DVD set. |

A correction to my post immediately above: after watching his DVD again today, I saw that Jonathan actually DOES do a color change at the beginning (clear water to black), but leaves it black at the end of the effect.
For some reason, I remember from his lecture of a couple of years ago that he didn't make the water black at all. But I think my brain juice is going from clear to black. |

With Jonathan's method though you don't have to change the color of the water. If you see his lecture he will show this. The toxic chemicals are the ones that change the water black but aren't dangerous once they have dissolved in the water. You just don't want to ingest the chemicals and in all reality you should be fine.

I have Pendragon do both. I prefer the non-black water. Makes no d@mn sense to turn the water black. Might as well just put it in a box.

Charlotte Pendragon's Mystery Sands is a GREAT improvement on the traditional 'Sands' effect because you don't have to use chemicals to make the water dark! Your skin is an excellent way to absorb toxins and I really don't want my hands in these chemicals. With Charlotte Pendragon's version, you can keep the water crystal clear (YES!) or you can stir up the sand and cloud it if you want. Either way, no chemicals! I prefer keeping the water crystal clear. I also bought my own Charlotte Pendragon's Mystery Sands and can personally say that her unique design shines above all the rest! Mine was custom made to include four colors of sand, so that the theme will go with my Native American storytelling magic. I recently presented my new Mystery Sands to an audience of 600 and blew them away with pure elegance!
Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

Correction: Charlotte Pendragon may be currently marketing a sands kit, but the clear water innovation is not her work. Jonathan has lectured about it since he first created it in 2008 (the bowl design he created as far back as the mid-90s, although he kept the black water for a while). Even Charlotte used to acknowledge it as Jonathan's work, though now she's claiming to have made changes.
