If you want to make one, get a Forstner bit and drill slowly.

I found this demo of Hypno Glass on YouTube by Geek Magic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEtSo2qTjpw It looks like it is the exact same effect. Only difference is U.F. Grant supplied a smaller plastic glass and a small square painted wood board approximately 3" square. Hypno is done on a book, so I guess the only prop you will get is the glass and instructions. I tell you this is a great "one on one" trick", when the local dealer demonstrated the U.F. Grant trick years ago on me, it was a really weird feeling or sensation when you can't lift the glass off the board. Of course how it plays in the real world, is unknown. If you have rude people grabbing at everything, then who knows. It would play well in a place like a restaurant or bar, with different people sitting at a table. One person can lift the glass, like a child, and the parent can't lift the glass. In a bar it may even be better, because you could give a whole new theme to it, like one with a little more to drink then someone else. Here you could even use one of the bar coasters setting the tables, they are usually round or square, perfect for this trick. I do believe it has to be felt by the spectator, those watching just can't imagine what the person is experiencing. If you want one just like the old Grant effect, I am sure Abbott's Magic could make you one. They have the old style glasses, and can cut a board for you. I believe their ball glass will work for this as well. So if you know the "secret" then just buy a ball glass from Abbott's. Searching Abbott's I don't see their ball glass offered, so you would have to inquire with them. |

I've done the "Hypno Glass" for a lot of years. The difference is, I use a stem glass( like a wine glass) this way everything is examinable and becomes a real head scratcher.

Thus you have an idea that would warrant you selling your idea or offering it to one of the current magic magazines for publication. Of course I have not read every book and magazine, but I believe your different handling deserves publication for the record someplace. Good job! |

I believe in the grant version you have a silk inside the glass rather than covering it. I assume the angles are alittle more restrictive this way

Of course there is no rule that someone cannot try performing it that way, but that would not be following the instructions that came with the trick. |

The light heavy glass sold by Grant was used both ways. With the handkerchief wadded up and stuck in the glass or covering the glass. I still have my Grant glass and I believe I still have the board too. I remember the Grant instructions suggesting that a book be used.
Using an un-gimmicked glass (regular drinking glass) on a book and covered by a man's handkerchief was published by Eddie Joseph. I've never seen the stemware version in print.

I also use a large vase with 5 faces spaced out evenly. It sits on a wood stool.

The Grant instructions suggest this:
Fill glass with CONFETTI. Displaying the glass in your hand, your thumb keeps the confetti in. ...yet, the confetti still allows you to do "the dirty work". Clever, eh? |

The Grant instructions also suggest, at the start, you pour WATER (liquid) into & out of the glass - to demo it's a regular glass.
As Harry stated, my instructions also say that a silk is placed inside the glass...then covered by a hanky. Many times, Grant issued updated instructions for the same prop...so, the ideas found on one man's instructions...may differ from another person's. |

Yep, one later version of his instructions has you using your thumb to cover what needs to be covered to pour water in and out of the glass. One set of my instructions just suggests that a handkerchief be stuffed in the glass and that alone would give the necessary cover to do the dirty work. it is the handling I most used. I do like the confetti idea.

I have an old Supreme one that is the light and heavy effect, the floating glass effect, the vanishing glass under the handkerchief, and the reappearance of the glass and silk inside a collapsable top hat that was flat before you produce the glass....Tricky, yes?

This brings back memories! I dug through my instructions, and I found the instruction sheet to "Light and Heavy Glass", but I have no idea where the original props that I purchased are at. But it sure brings me back down old memory lane.

Important presentation note! Robert Houdin did not say that the "box" would get heavy! He said that he could cause the "lifter" to become weak as a woman!!! In that corner of the world, remember that women were "second class" citizens!
This psychology convinced the superstitious men that they would have no chance in a battle, etc. I have held Ken Klosterman's Light and Heavy Chest. I can easily see how Houdin's presentation could convince the "radicals" that they wouldn't be able to prevail! I prefer the water "convincer". Confetti is "pretty",but messy! One season, years ago, I did a presentation on "how a magician prevented a war", the jail cell lock that Houdini could mot pick, and another story that I can't remember. The light and heavy glass was a part of the bit.It was very effective.

I had one of these years ago, no idea what happened to it. In fact I used to have so many bits and pieces that I don't know what happened to them. Is it just me, or does the same thing happen to others.

Happens to me, too. In my case, I've done a good share of moving over the years. I truly believe things get lost in the process of moving and storing . If I had all the magic equipment I've owned over the decades, it would require a room three times as big as my current one.
