There's been a lot of discussion on the Café lately regarding Goldman's Mental Yarn. I've performed Mental Yarn on a regular basis for the past nine years and a version is always in my wallet. I was wondering if anyone would like to discuss their ideas and possibly share their presentation for Mental Yarn? What about as a mind reading type effect, or using a prediction of the selected word, etc. I once produced the thought of object after having requested the spectator visualize it in my hand. Pretending to pick it up, and then dropping it into their hand. Those who own the effect will understand what I mean given the ideas in the instructions. Anyway, does this weaken the effect or make it stronger? What about using a written prediction? I may be just confusing the effect by going these other routes. Perhaps simply identifying the thought of object is the best way to go. Actually, I've always presented it this way, except on several occasions where I once predicted it and once produced it. I really couldn't tell if the reaction was any stronger or different. Again, would anyone like to discuss his or her ideas and/or presentation of this effect?

Hey Gregory57!
I like your idea about producing the item (or a miniture version of the item). How cool! Up until now I've had it in my notepad (a small pocket sized notebook to do center tears and other things with). I use it once in a while when I remember that it is in there. It always gets a pretty good response, doesn't it? Later. Greg |

Sometimes, when I'm doing this for larger audiences, I will have replicas of the objects for the spectator to choose from.
I NAME them, out loud, as I place them on the table for them to consider. This way there is no confusion as to what each item might be. In doing it with just the lists, one thing I add is a little comment about the stagecoach as I ask them to imagine that I am holding the object in my hand - "If you are thinking of the stage coach or the ocean liner, PLEASE - just think of a PHOTOGRAPH of which ever one you are thinking of. Otherwise, I'll get a psychic hernia!" It's a good laugh and it serves as a bit of a throw off as to the method, too. Lee Darrow, C.Ht.

Greg,
Yes, it does alway get a good response. Also, I either produce a miniture yellow ball of yarn or a small pocket knife. I've dropped the object into their hand and some people literally jump. Lee, I like your "psychic hernia" line. I also agree, that any time you can get them laughing it certainly does help to throw them off track a little. I also never thought about having the objects on display when presenting it on stage. Nice idea.

I use it for preshow work for a design duplication. I have used it mixed in with various book tests, so by the time I get around to revealing the object, the audience does not even remember there was any type of limited selection.
I am whatever I am to you.

I have the "mental list" version of this. I discovered after only a few performances, the spec either loves or hates it. I usually prefer shorter length mentalism effects but this thread has renewed my interest.

Cubreporter,
I never thought about using this in preshow work for a design duplication. What a great idea. The spectator's amazed and the audience's perception would of course be of an even stroger effect.

Tried this effect today at a family birthday party. Since it is a long effect, my sis in law lost some attention and the effect was lost:(

Hi this is my first post on here and I've been using mental yarn for some time now.
My main presentation is to get the spectator to picture the image as strong as possible in her mind and I then proceed to draw a very rough version of the item. Even when I hand it to the spectator I am unsure of what it is until she recognizes it.
