What are your opinions about pain tricks, when I name scary magic, I mean magic where the magician does things that appears to the audience that he is hurting himself (like needle thru arm, and for example iron garrote)
I don´t like these kind of effects. When I say scary magic I mean pain magic, ok.

Not my bag at all. I do more of Docc Hilford's illusions.

You should read Burger's strange ceremonies. I think these type of effects, like many bizarre effects can be used sparingly, to enhance the overall response to your magic, because it blends into everything else you do.

It's always my belief that it depends on your audience.
If you get a show that is meant to be a kind of twisted sideshow (and they aren't very uncommon) then seemingly painful tricks can be okay in mass. For a performance of the bizarre, done correctly, a ritual of pain can add texture to a show. But for many shows, there is no need to show pain. It all depends on the audience. ---Malak |

Or if you have a character that enjoys pain and feels like he needs to exploit that and share it with his audience. Malak has seen part of my show and knows just what mean.
Also, My ex girl friend, before I met her, had this terrible problem and actually cut herself. She now has nothing but a few scars. This has made me feel a little bit uncomfortable. I mean I am essentially mimicking a serious problem in some people. However my character is a possessed man and not a normal man.

I wouldn't use it as the "main dish", but perhaps a bit on the side. I currently only have one effect in which I use it, and it's good for getting people all squirmy as a buildup for when the penny drops, but as the main effect it would just be kind of ghoulish.

I think a well placed pain trick can help to give you an authentic feel. depending on what you're doing it can help to convince the audience of the supposed reality of other effects. it can be used to make you more convincing.

What are the best "pain" tricks?

I have found glasswalking to be an effective pain trick. It is not painful, but it is impossible for most people to imagine that. So my presentation is that I have the ability to transcend pain. Please see the Path of Pain at:
[outdated link] I think what works about this is the austere presentation. Lots of hinting about pain, but I enter a "trance-like" state and calmly walk across the glass. I have seen photos of other performers who take a different approach, jumping up and down on the glass like crazed punk rockers. I haven't seen their performances, so I am not criticizing them as ineffective, I'm just saying what has worked for me. My approach to other pain tricks would be similar. I would try to convey that I am trained to transcend pain, not that I am out of my mind. Yours, Paul |
