The Hat Loader
E-Z Magic Confetti sprinkled into a hat, then a production of silks, rope, scarves, and the finale is a glass of milk (?). Die Through Hat P&L and I believe U.F. Grant different methods. P&L Die in topless box with large holes on each side. Placed on crown of down turned hat. The block penetrates under hat. U.F. Grant same effect, no box used as I remember. P&L Glass Penetration P&L Glass placed on tall brass candlestick, covered with a hanky, Hat placed on top of covered glass. Glass slowly penetrated upward into hat. Glass removed from hat. Glass can contain liquid if you wish. Tarbell has a trick with 2 hats and paper balls moving like a Matrix effect. Rabbit from hat, see Tarbell Hat production of silks, see Tarbell Paul Gertner dice routine Growing die production ending in a large 4 inch die production Don Alan Lump of Coal A copper and Silver trick ends with the appearance of huge lump of Coal. In later years Don Alan changed the Coal to a huge metal Nut without the bolt. |

Jimmy Talksalot the street performer does a great routine he put on video were he gives the illusion his arm reaches all the way in the hat. Then his wand disappears and he pulls it back from his hat repeated a couple of times. Nice routine for an ungimmicked hat.
Also the finger thru hat always is a good quickie. I saw a guy do a misers dream to a hat which looked great. He showed the hat empty and shook it to prove nothing was in it You heard a thud and the hat shook slightly as the coin dropped in, then you could hear clinks of coins, finally he poured a casscade of coins from it as a climax. it was done very well and in a half circle show rather close up |

Jamie, check out Bob Read's Transpo Tumbler. It's the glass, hat, and paper cover routine that was the basis for the routine John Carney performed on the David Letterman show. That gem, and Dani Diortiz's version of the Slydini Balls in hat are reason enough to want to wear one, even if it isn't as cool as yours. That's quite the looker.

I love showing the depth of a hat with Jim Paces routine. It's great to produce an item in a Bugs Bunny way. I think it was from Visuantics

Doc Eason all the way. His routine is on one of his bar magic dvd's. I think from memory that Scott Alexander has something on one of his '...o'clock show' DVD's.

One of my favorite routines with a hat is the card from the hat. A card is selected, signed and returned to the deck. The deck is placed in the hat. The selected card climbs out of the hat. Burger goes the this routine in one of his tapes. Paper balls in the hat, and using the hat for a Benson Bowl routine are also pieces I like to do.
Btw, my newest hat is on my head in my profile picture. Tony |

Tony - nice hat. Jamie - likewise!
Benson bowl routine with toy rabbit final load. Jimmy Talksalot's hat routine is fantastic. The Miser's dream idea is great, obviously. Using it as a running gag could be great. Say, anything that disappears, you pull out of the hat. Pat Page's Book Of Visual Comedy has a load of very old-school hat gags in it. In the right show, you could do several minutes of hat material before you even began, or just a few bits of business between effects. There's maybe 20 solid bits of business in the book relating to hats. |

Don't forget Gazzo when he produces a Melon at the end of his cups and balls routine... Jim Cellini did some stuff with his hat too if I can remember...

I seem to recall an egg bag that doubled as a fez - maybe in an old Gamages catalogue.

I use my hat to put things in when I perform Magic to Music. I also like to wear a number of hats when I perform. A good hat can enhance your appearance and is a good accessory to your costume as well. Cheers!
