Adjusted for inflation, were (for the most part) also the earliest.

It is interesting.
Before I clicked the link, I wondered if Jefferson would make the list. He was one of those wealthy people who had difficulties making ends meet. I personally think (without evidence) that the reason he didn't free his slaves is that he didn't know how he could manage without them from a business standpoint. |

Yes. I checked the original article upon which this one was based. The pertinent section reads:
"The net worth of the presidents varies widely. George Washington was worth over half a billion in today's dollars." Accoring to that article, Washington's net worth was 525 Million. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/02/21......939.html |

How does Mitt stack up? Probably in the top 4 if elected:
http://prospect.org/article/just-how-doe......th-stack Certainly the trend post-Harry Truman is to come in like a lamb and go out like a lion what with autobiographies, speakers' fees, and board of directorships. The fish stinks from the head in the colorful Yiddish saying.

I find it facinating actually. It sort of gets rid of some misconceptions. I always thought Carter had serious money. Nice article. (Huffpost not withstanding.)
Yea Kerry, Kennedy and such would have stacked up pretty well huh?

Well, landmark, I agree with you completely on this:

Certainly the trend post-Harry Truman is to come in like a lamb and go out like a lion what with autobiographies, speakers' fees, and board of directorships. LBJ certainly amassed a fortune during his political career, but a major part of that was related to his power as Senate Majority Leader, rather than his presidency. Caro's biography contrasts him with fellow Texan Sam Rayburn, who although one of the most powerful men in Washington, died poor. |
